I know it's all really personal preference but I don't know where to start when it comes to layering for commuting on a bike. No more than 10 miles one way, in temperatures between 20-35 degrees. Should I splurge on gore tex? Like I said I'm not sure where to begin. Thanks for any help.

Well first of all it depends how much you actually ride every week.
try riding with sweat pants and then try on theGore tex and see how you feel.

At 20-35 degree weather you really aren't going to feel great when you start out riding but remember, once you get going, your body warms up.. i recommend 2 layers of socks, with booties on your shoes..cycling shorts with warm cycling pants..check out under armor under shirts.. then cycling shirt..with sleeves of course.. and then a cap for your head, a warm cap if you can fit it under your helmet that covers your ears works the best for me.. try to keep your head and feet warm and it really helps.. dont forget warm gloves that cover your fingers as well.. good luck!
