I'm looking for a solution where one bike rack can be used on two different vehicles - a Jeep Wrangler and a Nissan Pathfinder - without inhibiting a trailer connection. A roof rack is not a great option for the convertible Wrangler. Even if I got a rack that would not impede putting the top down, it would likely be difficult to move the rack from the Wrangler to the Pathfinder. A strap-on wouldn't likely work well at all for the Wrangler. A spare tire mount would work for the Jeep but not for the Pathfinder. I have found two options that are close - both hitch related. The first is a hitch that has an additional receptacle welded to the top that a hitch mount bike rack could be attached to. The problem with this is that the Wrangler is much lower to the ground than the Pathfinder. I already use two different hitches for the different vehicles. The one for the Pathfinder drops down 4 inches and the one for the Wrangler props up 2 or something like that. I only saw one version of the welded receptacle. The other option is a hitch rack that actually mount over the hitch. This would work well for the Pathfinder but not as well for the Wrangler since the hitch is below the spare tire. Is there a rack that can be used as a strap on to the Pathfinder and a spare tire mount for the Wrangler? In the latter implementation, it wouldn't mount to the lug screws, it would just sit on the tire???
