I bought a mongoose bike at toys r us. The left side has three numbers to choose from, 1, 2, and 3. Which one does what? And on the right is has 1-6. What does all of this mean?

Ill assume that you are young and now you have learned the #1 rule in cycling.....It means that you have a bike not even suitable for a landfill. AND it Means you have an 18 speed "bike" and your 1-3 change the degree of difficulty in pedaling, 1 is on the smallest ring in front and 3 is the largest. One thru 6 are on the rear and determine the degree of difficulty in pedaling in 1-3. Ride and change them while you pedal only! Do it quick because the bike wont last long enough to really get the hang of it! These are also called "shifters" and more exact, Grip shifters since it is a nearly obsolete 6 speed.

Normal ridding use 2 on the left and 1-6 on the right.

When you come to a stop shift to 2 and 2 so you can get started again.

For hills use 1 and 1-4

For high speed and down hill use 3 and 4-6

You want to keep pedaling at 70-90 rpm's with a lite pressure on the pedals. If you are in a gear that you can't accelerate in drop down another gear or two. If you have to strain by mashing on the pedals your legs wont last long.

It's not a good idea to stress the chain by using 1 on the left and 5-6 on the right or 3 and 1-3 most of the time you can feel the chain binding against the gears.
