bike gear and exercise question...?

Going to be using a bike for exercise right now because of an injured ankle that I still can't run on. On the bike I'm using there are shifts on both sides. The left side 1,2,3 and the right side 1-8. What are the difference between these and how can I use them effectively when riding for exercise.

I could type it out, but I won't since it's all over the internet. Good luck, have fun, and enjoy your bike.

Normal riding use 2 on the left and 1-8 on the right. Shift back to 2 and 2 before you come to a stop so you can start out again easily.

For Hills use 1 and 1-5

For going down hill use 3 and 5-9

Never use the smallest and largest gears at the same time, it causes the chain to run at an angle that is hard on it and the gears.

You want a gear that is easy to pedal at 70-90 rpm's Your body is most efficient at that cadence and it will keep your legs from getting tired. You want to still be able to talk but not sing. If you need to catch your breath or your legs start to hurt drop down a gear or two and keep going.
