Bike Cover

I've been commuting to work for a couple of months now. Bike is usually in the sun about six hours a day. Some at work have said the sun will cause the paint to fade and problems with the seat and leather. Should I get a cover? Seems like a pain to deal with, but maybe its worth it. What does everyone else do? What cover would you recommend?

I get to park in garage parking at home and at work.

When I go for one of my day-long visits to mom's house, I have to park in her drive-way. On sunny days, I just drape a towel over the bike's seat so that it's not so hot when I'm ready to leave.

Regarding the rest of the bike: I think the bike should be ok, provided the proper washing/waxing attention is given to it. Keeping it nicely waxed will help avoid a lot of that damage the sun can cause.

If I were parking my bike outside AND was not too crazy about waxing the bike, I'd invest in a cover, even though it seems like it would be a pain-in-the-neck.

Watch out for cheap covers. I got a cheaper Dowco and it scuffs the paint in certain spots. It's nearly unavoidable, no matter how careful I am.

I don't have a garage yet, so our bikes sit out all season. Last year, I bought two Parts Unlimited Ultra II covers through Dennis Kirk (Dennis Kirk | Metric Bikes Main Page. I've been very pleased with it; sheds water like a ducks back, good elastic on the bottom so it stays put, and is very durable.

I remember I had to swap mine out, as the recommended size was too small for my C50 with windshield and bags. I'm pretty sure I ended up with an XL. (Dk has a really good return/exchange/refund policy)

I park our bikes in the shed over the winter, and use the cheap $20 k-mart cover for that. It's easier to take on and off, and I like keeping the good one in over the winter so bugs don't move in. As it is in the summer, if I go 2 weeks without riding, there's either a collection of spiders, or the beginning of a wasp's nest..

Thanks to everyone for the feedback. For now maybe I'll try the Walmart special. Need something easy on/off and $20 sounds good, but I'll keep an eye out for scratches. My bike is garaged while at home, so even in Winter the Walmart cover will probably be okay.

Bud, if that doesn't work, the DK Ultra cover sounds good too.

;)
