Every time I squeeze the brakes, they wont release, or they would release very little, hence making it more difficult to ride my bike. I only have back brakes on 1970's Vista cruiser, its been tuned up when I bought it. How can I fix this at home, without going to the bike shop?

The inside of the cable that actuates your brake could be gummed or dry or the cable is frayed and causing more friction than the return spring can overcome. Inspect the cable at the ends of the housing to see if frayed wires are restricting the movement of the cable. If that's the case you need the shop to install you a new cable and maybe housing. If the cable is in good condition you might try dripping a light teflon lubricant at the ends of the housing and actuating the brake to cause the lube to enter the housing. If this doesn't work....you may need to put more spring in your spring. Try removing each end of the spring from the stop on the calipers and bending the spring out some then replace and test. You may have to recenter the calipers after you do this. Make sure the pads are centered and aligned on the rim. I understand that you don't want to incur any more expense, but you may need a new cable and housing. In that case, your best bet is to allow the shop to do it for you as they will also adjust your brakes with installation.
