Biggest Oscar mistakes

Although, it did sort of win, as before it's nomination, me, and man called Joe and his dog were about the only people who'd gone to see it in the cinema when first released, once it got the nominations, people started checking it out, and realised what a masterpiece it is.

Oh yes, Titantic winning

And Liam Neeson and Ralph Fiennes both missing out for Schindler's list, huge mistake.

I'd never heard of Jake Gyllenhaal before I saw BBM, but that film left a bigger impact on me than any of the others, I saw them all.
I will admit that Capote was brilliant, as was Philip Seymour Hoffman.
I still stand by what I said,:D and that is my opinion hunney !:D

She absolutely deserved to win that oscar. I also felt that Ralph Fiennes was robbed the year he was nominated for Schindlers List. I can't remember who won in his category but I have a feeling it was Tommy Lee Jones for The Fugitive.

I like Jake. Actually I think Zodiac is his best film and the best film he has done (Jarhead was dull imo) and for me a far superior film to BM, sorry....lol

Have to agree

I love that film

It seemed to tap into something very special when it was released

The story, the spectacle, the romance, the SFX, and yes, even that song!

I remember years ago, sitting on a bus, and a guy was sitting in front of me reading a 5 inch script titled "Titanic". I thought at the time, God, I hope they don't try and make a film of that - well how wrong was I LOL

Oh, and for those who mentioned Babe, love that too. Even a old wizened hobbit like me, can't stop bursting into tears when I watch it - must be something in me eye

I sometimes think that Oscars should wait for a couple of years to see what bobbed up and floated straight back down again, and what is shaping up to be a true classic. I bet if for example Schindler's List were in question now, that both would win. (And perhaps Ben Kingsley nominated also.)

Same with Swanks performance in Boys Don't Cry, i thought her co star Chloe Sevigny gave the better performance and that Annette Bening deserved the best actress oscar that year for American Beauty and was indeed the fave to win.

You and me both, AK. Brokeback is one of the great films of the decade. Crash, for all its worthiness, left a bad taste and quickly faded from memory.

I haven't seen No Country, but it must be an all-time great if it deserved to beat There Will Be Blood, which is a truly remarkable film.

Atonement didn't deserve a best film nomination. Great book, awful film. Its score was inventive but is blown out of the water by Jonny Greenwood's music for There Will Be Blood... which didn't even get nommed. I guess he doesn't have enough mates in Beverly Hills

Ultimately, I care less and less each year about what the academy thinks. As this thread shows, there have been many poor decisions down the years. With each new daft decision, I'm more inclined to ignore the whole tub-thumping hoopla. The members all have their agendas and frienRAB; wholly objective they ain't, it's inevitable.
