Biggest Oscar mistakes

Crash, one of the most over-rated films of the modern era winning best picture. But ..

The biggest mistake for me: Ralph Fiennes losing out to Tommy Lee Jones for best supporting actor in 1994. His portrayal of Amon Goeth in Schindler's List was simply awesome and frightening.

I agree there were no real upsets (a couple of minor surprises though) although personally I would have liked There Will Be Blood to win Best Picture, but NCFOM is a worthy winner (i'd say the strongest winner of this decade, which only shows how uninspired the choices have been thus far). Also I thought The Diving Bell and The Butterfly and The Assasination of Jesse James deserved much more of a look in too.

Tim Burton not being nominated for Sweeney Todd

Amelie - totally ignored

Alfred Hitchcock never getting best director

Ben Hur getting best picture when in the same year Some Like It Hot and North By Northwest didn't even get a mention in the nominations

I agree with the poster who suggested Oscars in hinRABight.
But I would make it a special category for "Most influential film" or something similar
so awarRAB can go to All About Eve, etc etc

That is the whole problem with awarRAB. Opinions are subjective and everyone has them..Many films that win big are in my eyes, a load of rubbish, but the masses beg to differ. Oh, and the odd backhander or 2 to the nomination panels helps certain films.

At the end of the days, such ceremonies are just an excuse for the luvvies to have a good time and get the media exposure they crave. Nothing more.

Sean Connery winning for The Untouchables. Possibly the most blantant 'better give him one, he's long overdue' award ever.
Chicago - Best Picture 2002. My arse it was. Gangs Of New York was sooo much better.

Indeed, also Anthony Hopkins losing out to Tom Hanks for Remains Of The day, and Phillip Seymour Hoffmans great performance in The Talented Mr Ripley being overlooked in favour of Jude Law's showier role

I've just been reading about Kate Winslet on t'internet and I still can't believe she hasn't won. I really do hope she wins one soon - she sooo deserves it.

She is such a brilliant actress, people have won for much worse performances.

Sorry love, just cos ya fancy an actor doesnt make it the best.

I watched all 5 films nominated and imo those 3 were far better films. BM imo was simply not good enough to win and be rated as the best film. In fact Capote was also imo better than BM or at least as good.

Nominated-class, yes, but not good enough to win.
