Biggest Oscar mistakes

The Hours only won for Best Actress and whilst Julianne Moore was excellent in Far From Heaven, Nicole Kidman's performance left me breathless!

I do agree that Chicago should never have won, it should have been the Pianist but I think given that the US was at war with Iraq, they wanted a lighter film to win.

OMG!!!!!:eek::eek:

That mustve been a crappy year for movies!

What a load of shite that film is.....

Margaret Rutherford was fantastic in that film. She did get an Oscar though for the VIPs.

I always feel it's slightly unfair when someone gets a second oscar - seems a little greedy! DDL was excellent and deserved the Oscar but then so did the other four nominees, one of whom has never been nominated before and one of whom is on his third nomination with no award yet. I know it's a silly view but I jsut think that maybe they should give someone else a chance!

Brenda Blethyn losing out for secrets and lies
Moulin Rouge losing to A Beautiful Mind
Chicago beating The Hours
Will Smith actually being nominated for The Pursuit of Happyness
American History X not being nominated
Gwynnie beating Cate
Forrest Gump winning anything

:mad:2004.
'Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King' won over 'Lost in Translation' Outrage!!!!!!!!!! (Imo that was the worst of all 3 LOTR films...)

And I always felt kinda cheated that 'Finding Nemo'(slightly embarrissing I know...but I'm a child at heart, ) didn't get nominated in Best picture!

I hated Braveheart and I love Babe.

I think it was a mistake to introduce an animated film category because it now means that no matter how brilliant and animated film is it can never win the highest accolade even if it is deserved. Plus in some years the animated films are terrible but they stil ahve to pick a winner.

Another one - Peter O'Toole nominated 8 times and never winning. Even though he lost to Gregory Peck (To Kill A Mockingbird) when nominated for Lawrence of Arabia, I think I'd be inclined to give O'Toole the nod here. Definitely better than Rex Harrison in My Fair Lady when nominated for Becket.

Trisha Biggar-she did absolute sterling work for the Star Wars prequal trilogy costumes, worked in difficult conditions(ie the Tunisian desert shoots) and got not a shred of recognition

On the contrary, there has been:
La Grande Illusion 1938
Z 1969
The Emigrants 1972
Cries and Whispers 1973
Il Postino 1993
La vita e bella 1998 and
Letters from Iwo Jima.

None have won. I may also have missed out a few as I was just skimming the list. There have also been a number of films to have had more than one language - including Dances With Wolves, probably the closest there has been to a foreign language film Best Picture winner. Surely that in itself is one of the biggest mistakes?

There's probably plenty I agree with in all of this thread, but upon seeing the thread title the most recent that springs to mind is Cars. There's no way Happy Feet should have won.

No way!! Julieanne Moore outclassed Kidman both in her role in the hours, AND Far from Heaven, she was robbed! (by Kidmans prosthetic nose!:D)

I didn't think Crash was all that it was cracked up to be  Performances were good but the story seemed far to contrived.
Brokeback Mountain was a terrific film, very moving.

Chicago winning was a travesty.

The Prestige NOT getting a Best Screenplay nomination never mind the oscar it deserved.

Psycho NOT getting an oscar (nor Hitchcock for that matter).

Jim Carrey getting overlooked time and again - Truman show has been mentioned, but I thought it was scanalous that Kate Winslet was nominated for Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind but Carrey was not - when it was the interplay between the two actors that made the film work.

Comedy films getting overlooked time and again when it is THE hardest genre to get right. Fantasy/sci-fi get the bums rush most of the time, Lord of the Rings excepted.
