Biggest Oscar mistakes

I loved Munich so much, it moved me to tears. Eric Bana is such an under rated actor. He was truely amazing as Avner. 2005 was a tough year for best film.Brokeback mountain was stunning too.
 
James Mason should have won for his performance in "A Star Is Born"..........if he'd been nominated in any other year other than 1954 which was Brando's year I'm sure he would have won. It's not a mistake per se but one of those occasions when there are more great performances than Oscars to be awarded...........Judy Garland was definitely robbed that year though by Grace Kelly
 
Very often this happens at the BAFTAs too and the Oscars are nowhere near as bad as say the Cesars (France) and the Goyas (Spain) which rarely if ever give awarRAB to people who are not from those countries.

It's only natural to vote for your own countrymen.
 
Shawshank Redemption should have won best movie.

Glory should have been at least nominated in 1989 - although I think My Left Foot would have been more deserving. Either were better than the actual winner.

None of the Stars Wars modern trilogy winning best Special effects was a bit rediculous aswell.

Raging Bull not winning in 1980 - bit of a robbery.

Its a bit weird looking back at all the films that have been nominated - okay films, but you would never put in an Oscar Contender category now.

Al Pacino in Scent Of A Woman........so bad in every way! Should never have been awarded for that role but I guess the Academy were making up for lost time
 
The very worst was Forrest Gump winning Best Picture when up against arguably the two definitive films of the 90's: Shawshank and Pulp Fiction.:mad:

Runner up would be Brokeback Mountain losing out to Crash :rolleyes:
 
Ordinary People winning over Raging Bull.

Tom Hanks winning over Liam Neeson for Schindler's List.

Lots of whoopsies in the Foreign Language section also.
 
Probably true, though have never seen the movie.
I think Crawford was thrilled to death for Davis not winning, and than Crawford herself accepted the award on behalf of, umm, was it Anne Bancroft???
 
I think Edward Norton should have won either one of the Oscars he was nominated for.

How Robert Downey Jr. hasn't got one yet I don't know.

Why has Keira Knightly ever been nominated?

I wish Kate Winslet had won one by now.
 
Oh, I almost forgot American Beauty. What a load of overhyped exercise in pseudo-intellectualism that was (and I am a fan of Kevin Spacey, Chris Cooper and Annette Bening). Cooper's character in particular being ridiculously ott, you knew there was a twist...

An average film grossly overhyped with a plot so conventionally obvious Ray Charles could have seen the plot 'twists'.
 
For me, the best performance by an actress last year was Judi Dench in Notes on a Scandal. Much more layered than Helen Mirren in The Queen. Think I'm in a minority though as Mirren won every award going!
 
I totally agree with you, Dench was a revelation, Mirren very much looked the part and Hollywood loves royalty, not disputing that Mirren's a great actress but I don't think she was the best last year.
