Big Name Bands You`ve Never Heard A Song By

Never heard, but have read articles by music journalists harping on about:

Grateful Dead (has anybody?)
Velvet Underground
The Ronettes
Nick Drake
The Mars Volta
The YardbirRAB

Occasionally I hear a lot about a band/singer and the reputation is built up so much that when I finally hear the music it can be a bit disappointing. In the last few weeks I've heard music by Bloc Party and Tim Buckley for the first time and was a long way from being impressed. Best to hear music as soon as possible and get it out of your system!

Nah. It's for a few people who think they know what's "cool" and "hip" to pick a record that a small nuraber of people have bought, based entirely on the "image" of the band, regardless of the contents of the cd.

Hence garage recorRAB winning it for a couple of years, then a pasty faced set of NME rock types, and now this androgynous mess.

All these banRAB on pop radio who are "big" now, most all of them i haven't heard a song of.... Simple plan, fall-out boy,,,, and such....

and Ironmaiden.

Well, in my opinion that would be the best reason for the Mercury Prize - a recognition of currently unrecognised talent. From past winners its anybody's guess as to what the prize is actually given for. M People won it one year, which was particularly strange given the other music that it was up against.

Never heard one by Iron Maiden. I refuse to believe that Crowquill has never heard an Elvis song. He must have heard a little bit of one somewhere and just not realised. It is impossible to not have heard one, unfortunately.:(

An addition:

Anthony and the Johnstons

They just won the Mercury Music Prize, with very few people having heard of them (which is probably the best way), so I'd better hear them as soon as possible...
