Bidding on my first paint job, Help?

Hello, just opened my own painting business (houses) and i have a van with my name on it and all the equipment a painter needs plus preasure washer. I got my first call and i am not experiance with bidding on a job. One person, told me to look the job over and tell the person that i would like to go write a proposal and give them the bid the next day. To have time to really figure the job. Is this a good idea, becouse i do not want to over bid or under bid too much. I have someone that can help me with it away from the place (to figure). Is this the best way. Thanks
