Bicycle wheel won't spin when pedalling?

I have a decent condition bike (maybe one year old), it is a bit rusty and squeaks, yes, but my other bike is much worse and it at least still pedals.

I pedal the bike and the wheels don't move, just the gears spin, but not the wheels, so it's like pedalling thin air. What could be the problem and how can I fix it?
I started doing this a day ago. Sometimes if I pedal for a long time suddenly it starts working again.
 
Sounds like you freewheel is going bad. Take the wheel of of you bike and take it to a bike shop and have them replace it. It takes a special tool to remove it.
