ok recently i had jsut bought a bicycle, and when i tried to put in air, the valve was one i had never seen before its long and skinny, and it doesnt fit my air pump, any help

It's called a presta valve, go to the local bike shop and get a presta valve adapter. It will allow you to use a regular bike pump. They go for about $1

Well, you bought yourself a bike with a presta valve, a devilish French invention. Not sure what it's value is over a schrader other then to confound people, but it's nearly universal on road bikes with 700c tires.

Most pumps come with a head that can be adapted to either style. You'll know if your's can if it has a screw cap at the pump head. If so, unscrew the cap, remove the plug, turn it over, and reassemble.

You then have to unscrew the metal tip cap on the valve before you can pump air in. Just as far as it'll easily turn. It stays attached to the valve stem.

It's called a presta valve.

To fill it you'll need a presta adapter, here is how it's done:

1) Rotate the wheel until the valve is at the top of the wheel
2) Remove valve cap
3) Unscrew but DO NOT try to remove the small nut on the end of the valve
4) Install the adapter
5) Inflate as usual
6) Remove adapter
7) Tighten the nut on the end of the valve... finger tight only
8) Install valve cap
