Bicycle gear and break problem?

Hey there.

I bought a Bicycle from walmart (dont say walmart has shitty bikes, i cant spend $500 on a "good" one) and the gears wouldnt change at all so i brought it back for an exchange. The second one worked great but about a week into riding it the breaks make this LOUD sound when I press it and the gears randomly change. After hurting my testicle changing gears I just locked it up in the shed and it hasnt been used since.

However recently I'm finding it more important to use a bicycle to go medium distances and I was wondering if anyone had suggestions before I take it into a Bike shop and spend money.

-The breaks make loud noises when i press them
-The gears randomly change by themself
sorry for poor spelling, I am not a native english speaker >.<

Ok first of all I will try to not tell you what you bought is the nature of the true problem.

The brakes (not breaks -- break is "gimme a break") need adjusting, probably toe in of the pads. Click on the brakes on the image on the Park Tool link provided and follow the directions to adjust.

The random shifting is a larger issue and probably needs new parts. I suspect that unless you have friction shifters (if they click for each gear they are indexed not friction) you probably need new shifters. If they are friction shifters tighten the tension wing nut on the offending shifter. You can also click on the shifters on the same Park Tool link for advise.
