Bev Testing MPEG4

Soon, I would envisage launch before the end of the year, although nothing is set in stone. I have no EXACT date.



Yes, the 9200 is several year sold now so ANY new receiver Will be an advancement. The models in the States that Express Vu will mimic have more HD recording time, due to a larger Hard Drive I believe. Plus it will have MPEG4 decryption capability, allowing it to live in the Market place for much longer than the 9200, as an HD PVR anyway.

HOWEVER, the 9200 is still the Flagship and will continue to function as an HD PVR for many tears to come. My guess is at least another 3 but who really knows.?
 
It depends on how you are meaning to come across. If they go to 8PSK they can run about 40mbps instead of the 31-32mbps the 7/8 FEC 20000 SR signals they have now. Using DishNetwork as a reference, they've been able to double their channels on one TP by moving to MPEG4.

Someone else mentioned that the Nimiq's were packed full. That's not true. There's room on 82W for some playing.
 
It might. They could convert individual themes to MPEG4 first, thereby affecting only those with that theme. That way they could stagger the conversion.

With DN's conversion of VOOM content to mostly MPEG4 and their 1/2 dozen new HD channels just launched, I took a drive today to check it out and it's seems that 6 HD's per transponder is being used and the quality looks pretty decent.
Now they also happen to be 8PSK as well.

So how this might translate for Bev is speculation.
Maybe some new sats in a few years will be powerful enough to also enable 8PSK for them, but I'm worried their orbital slots and the West coast might be show stoppers.

Without the additional gains of 8PSK, their straight conversion to MPEG4 should grant them 4 HD's per TP.

Even if Canada's major cities all go HD and DTH companies are expected to carry them, their isn't near as many markets as the 100+ the US has to provision for.

We may start to see spot beams being used to better accomodate this type of growth.
 
Who's to say the rumored receiver swap isn't actually going to happen? We've been paying an extra $10/month for something. Obviously BEV knew they would run out of capacity and have to do something long ago. I'm sure this didn't just sneak up on them. There is a plan and we haven't been told what it is.

I think there have been delays. It could be they're waiting for Echostar to release the 722. Or, more likely, it's related to the sale of BCE. I've said it before and will say it again, BEV has to compete with its competitors. If everyone has to buy a new receiver to get new channels, they'll lose customers to competitors. If they don't add any new channels, ditto. Neither is acceptable.

I just hope it will be the latest HD PVR VIP 722 with 55 hours of HD recording vs older model VIP 622 with 25 hours of recording.These are available to DN subscribers in states.
 
This is a long, long way off in Canada. Satellites need to be ordered and built. They won't even have the N2 replacement or the 72.5 slot occupied with a new satellite until 2009/2010. Dish and DirecTV won't be casting off any satellites with spot beams any time soon either. I can see EV moving their eastern locals, TMN and most French services to 72.5. That will free up space on 92 for western locals and MC. People in the east will need a repoint. Anyone who wants all three satellites will need a new dish.
 
Yes it's true but it will be different with Nimiq 4 if the launched is a success at spring 2008.

It is a lot of investment to gain just 1 Channel per TP.
 
The best description for non-pros connecting MPEG4, 8PSK, FEC (forward error correction), bandwidth, etc. and how it all relates to satellite transmission in general and to Bell in particular, I've read right on this site
