BEV - recent changes in picture quality?

What about with the sound? Does anybody have the same issue with me? You watch one channel, you need to put the volume higher, you change the channel, need to lower it...

It has always been like that.

I have asked, pleaded etc for an answer but no-one is offering one.

Logic says it is laziness in the transmission center where audio levels should be monitored and adjusted when needed. I guess the electronic equipment to do this is just too expensive.....

Yep, on their last legs. We all better sell our stuff now and sign up with Star Choice.

On topic, I haven't noticed any degrade, but I have only watched HD football in the last while which looks fine to me. Next week, I will be watching more as all the new episodes start.

Maybe if they used more Dolby Audio instead of Musicam audio, then ensured everybody complied and set Dialnorm settings properly things would be better.

Last leg, okaaaaaaaaay. I dont know why people that dont know about the true happenings behind the scenes feel that BEV will just lay down and die.

Its like those that are intensly critical have a 6th sense - but more so, I believe that those same people may work for the comp, are just trying weak hate tactics to deter the potential new BEV subs. If you look at the volume of people on this forum in the TV section, BEV always has the greatest viewing... As the largest Digital TV provider in all of the nation, lets confidently all assume that BEV will be just fine. Mark my words....I can also state that I view BEV and besides a few feeds of football this weekend on SD, the pic looks the same. I have been told that the feeds from the source came in poor....

Unfortunately viewing the HD channels with someone elses eyes is not possible. What one person might consider to be overcompression is not what another may see. Certainly some of the SD channels are problematic but many are not. What you see is totally subjective.....condition of eyes.......type of television......settings......etc. Until someone provides substantiated technical data it remains totally subjective and speculative.

3 HD channels per 27Mhz transponder = a data rate of less than 9MB/sec after error correction is factored in (MPEG2 QPSK).

If anyone thinks that 9MB/sec gives the same PQ as 13MB/sec or 17(cable) or 19.4 (OTA) either needs a new tv or a visit to their optometrist.

Even the engineers at the master of HD Lite (DirecTV) admit that degradation of HD picture is apparent at rates less than 12 in MPEG2 and 6.1 in MPEG4

um.........there are 2 HD channels per transponder on BEV.

I have noticed no degredation on the networks, or Discover HD or HDNET.

No changes in the picture here...but i'm in SD!

I have problems with the sound...very high on some channels and very lo on others. For example when I watch SRC I need to put the volume almost to the maximum, then when I switch to TVA I have to lower it to less than half of the sound bar. Anybody have similar problems?

Audio levels have been and continue to be a real problem. Evu blames the broadcasters and the broadcasters blame Evu. Since we live in a digital world it is beyond me why they cannot install limiters in the Evu control room to maintain levels for all channels. Particularly annoying is the insert for Vu on CNN and other channels that comes in at about ten dbs higher than the originating program. Unfortunately the sound levelers built into most tv sets only work with their tuners and not for cable or sat.

But does anyone have any REAL (objective, not subjective) evidence that EV signals have deteriorated?

Here is what I have found...
HD signals are still showing up at about 8-9GB/hr the same as ever. Some signals have been changed from 1920x1080i to 1024x720p. Further analysis shows that the signals have a pronounced increase in null packets. Null packets now account for up to 50% of the data stream. That is up from about 10% a couple of years ago. I'm not sure what the impact of this is but it does account for the smaller sizes of files recorded by some software, since stripping null packets is fairly easy. What it does to the picture quality, I don't know.
