As you have discovered Nem this forum has more trolls than The Lord of the Rings.

troll's it may have, but ARR is NOT one of them.

Nem, who doesn't see ARR as a troll

A few top line metrics:

Bell ExpressVu:
  • lost 7,000 customers (Apr 1 to Jun 30)
  • raised rates so that average customer pays $58/mth
  • churn rose from 1.0% to 1.3% compared to Q2 2006
  • stopped counting 8,000 customers that really weren't customers
  • lost around 71,000 existing customers
  • added around 64,000 new customers (net: -7,000)
  • generated $322 million over costs - best quarter ever
  • first time in history Bell ExpressVu has had a quarterly decline in net subs
It's a good thing to be able to squeeze more revenue per customer and generate more profits than ever. That's a good reason to keep the division instead of selling it -- cash flow. Bell is still several years from recovering the 8 years or so of quarterly losses it invested to start the business. A new owner may not carry about that, only cash flow.

It is worrisome if Star Choice is adding subs and Bell ExpressVu is losing them -- albeit in small amounts in both cases.

Maybe Bell ExpressVu will use some of these current profits to accelerate plans to deliver MPEG-4 HD hardware and services? To be clear: no one at senior management has said they would. In fact, there were no announcements whatsoever about the future of the business except that they expect to be "flat" in subscribers when the full year is complete.

I always thought Trolls were cute, cuddly, lovable little creatures, who wouldn't want to be one of those? ;)

No, those 8000 were cutomers, but they are described are "non-paying", so subs are down.

Fortunately, the majority of posters here offer insight, facts and informed opinion. It does get a little tiresome, however, hearing from folks who simply make outrageous claims (like new HD MPEG Channel Packs launching in 4 weeks time) without any shred of evidence or a sound business / technical explanation.

Mike, that's an excellent definition, thanks.

Unfortunately, it could easily apply to others, Bev Fan for example often posts thing so preposterous that a response is almost guaranteed.
Does that make him a troll?

And in topic specific threads, like Bev piracy, which in undoubtedly a sensitive topic, can anyone really be a troll?

I would much rather define another type of poster, that which through industry knowledge, shares his technology wisdom and insight.
Along the course, the opinion generates counter opinions, that further the discussion of the topic so that for all readers, all sides of the issues are conveyed to allow a bystander to make an informed decision.

As long as the opinion has some minimal foundation for it, all contributions are welcome provided we respect the individual and not make false accusations. We must choose our wording with the utmost care.
