The following is taken from the BCE Q1 press release, page 4, available at: http://bce.ca/data/documents/reports/en/2007/q1/2007q1-pr-en.pdf

I am not saying that figures are deliberately manipulated illegally but there is a lot of room for creative accounting. For example, rather than buying goods and services from the lowest bidder, I'm sure EV currently gets them from other BCE owned companies. That creates cash flow and profit for BCE at the expense of EV. BCE could sell the goods and services to EV at market price, heavily discounted or at cost, affecting both bottom lines. Items such as acquired debt can be treated in a number of ways that affect cash flow and profits. Then there are corporate policies that flow downhill and cause extra expense for EV but benefit BCE (hidden benefits.) There are only 3 way to become a respectable liar. Go into law, politics or accounting. :D

Churn will increase as readers here digest just what they got themselves into and as contract renewals come up in coming months along with all the unanswered and failed promises leaving to questions about the future.

Lower additions through the channels are a combination of dealers not being treated fairly and either doing better with other products such as Starchoice or FTA
AND
The effect of DHC providing a good pre-sales education to prospective subs from real world customers expressing the real and significant concerns about bad policies, equipment problems and signal quality issues amongst a host of other things.

Anyone with reliable info on how this compares to *C, and the cable sector?
Ohh, if there was only reliable number for the pirates....

Please be careful when presenting info from quarterly reports.

Example:

The ARPU (Average Revenue Per User) increased $4 Year over Year (at end Mar 31) ... with the benefit of price increases of $3 for new customers and $4 for legacy customers.

The subscriber net gain figure that matters is 4k on 1.82m for Q1 ... a paltry 0.2%.

Nor is Bell Canada's "leading" HD provider by subscribers -- Rogers has declared that metric repeatedly. More Canadians watch HD from Rogers than ANY other TV provider.

Even more to the point: Q2 earnings (ending Jun 30) are released on Wed Aug 1.

This thread is premature. Shaw, Star Choice and Cogeco reported two weeks ago; Rogers, Bell Aliant and Bell report this week; Videotron/Quebecor and Telus report next week. Where are all the players at "half time 2007"? We'll know in, more or less, a few hours.

Weren't all the last bunch of crooks at Nortel that caused their near demise from the BCE stables? Virtually everybody since Jean Monty.
I think there is a real possibility that this type of behavior is systemic all the way through the entire organization from the very top on down.

How else can you explain some of the conniving and wheeling a dealing that takes places daily from almost every agent in all if not most lines of business.

So who where those 8000 non paying subs, didn't the really mean the 800000 pirates that are basic subs only?

Just like when talking to an agent on the phone about your bill in dispute, we'll just skip a few digits here and there.

So as I easily predicted prior to the results being posted, this is the beginning of the end for Bev.
Increased churn, additional losses, and flat for the next while, which means no new HD of any significance, so expect even greater churn with the next report.

A business that continues to operate in the manner they have been and appear to want to continue is clearly destined for a rather big fall.

Yes, in a sense, they did add 1,000 customers in Q2 2007. As opposed to 19,000 in Q2 2006; 63,000 in Q2 2005.

Creative accountants tend to end up in jail these days, too.

Really, it's ok to take the numbers more-or-less at face value. But then ask questions about what they actually mean.

Arr, while normally I enjoy your wit and candor, this broad and sweeping generalization of BCE employees is more than a just a little offensive.

To imply that myself or any of my many collegues in any way, shape or form intentionally misinform, lie to or try to cheat our customers is a gross exaggeration of anything that comes remotely close to the truth.

True, there are those employees who give incorrect information or do not care about their customers, but they are a small minority and the vast majority of us understand what it takes to keep our customers happy and strive to provide excellent customer service in every aspect of the jobs we do in whatever line of business we work for within BCE.

Most likely, I'll continue to enjoy your wit and wisdom, but sadly, I've lost a little of the respect I have for you today.

Nem.

What am I missing here? These two lines don't add up. As mentioned, 4,000 net new subs doesn't equate to a subscriber increase of 4.9%.

I think DHC isn't large enough to have a significant impact on BEVs subscriber base. I think word of mouth about FTA and the poor service has more of an impact.

In retrospect, I have no idea why I posted Q1 info. I was thinking that Q2 info was to be released on July 30 for some reason, then I went and posted Q1 info. I guess the heat must be getting to me....

But I've worked for Jean Monty and judging by all the numerous accounts of subs getting treated precisely what I suggested and those here on DHC, both past and present, It's pretty easy to come to those conclusions.

If I have specifically painted you as rotten, then kindly accept my apologies.

I endeavor to ensure my remarks are generic and business practice targeted rather than at any specific individual(s), unless of course that something can be directly attributed to that person(s).

I do acknowledge your admirable efforts as an apparent Bell manager to coach your online agents that appear here frequently in the 'correct' ways.

You are not comparing apples withapples. Check out the financials -- this is all public info. See www.bce.ca for more.

Bell ExpressVu added 4,000 net new customers in Q1 (net subs added Jan 1 through Mar 31). They started with 1.820 million customers on Jan 1 and ended with 1.824 million customers on Mar 31. That's around 0.2% increase.

From Mar 31 2006 through Mar 31 2007 -- one full year -- Bell ExpressVu grew by 4.9%.

Almost as important: in Q1 2006 Bell ExpressVu added 12,000 net new customers. For Q1 2007 is added 4,000 net new customers -- a sinificnat slowdown.

Churn at 1.1% means Bell lost about 60,000 customers in Q1 2007 and had to replace them BEFORE adding 4,000 new customers for a net new add of 4,000 for the quarter. So: 60,000 customers left; 64,000 signed up.

Again, in a few hours, we'll have info on the spring quarter.

I wouldn't trust any financial figures from a vertically integrated company like EV/BCE. Internal cash flows and costs for services between divisions can be manipulated to distort the true picture. Also, hidden benefits are accrued, such as extra ad revenue gained by overly aggressive simsubs for BCE owned stations or exclusive use of BCE owned services such as telephone or digital networks.

The orginal post didn't specify that the 4.9% was for the 12 months ending Mar 31. Everything else was referring to the quarters perfomance only. No other references to other numbers over the last 12 months or even any YTD numbers. I'm sure you can see how someone might get a little confused.

Deliberately manipulating results can, and does, land senior management in jail. I think you can reasonably trust the numbers that are formally reported in documents, such quarterly earnings, which are filed with securities commissions.

Of course, how you interpret them can be something else.

And the only reason for the growth in 2005 was the introduction of Nagra 2 in July 2005, and the uncertainty of hacking bell after the card swap. By Spring 2006 it had become wide knowledge that expressvu and dish were hackable, and the number of new sub's dropped by over 2/3rd's, and now it down to a meger 1000. And as the 2 year contracts of the former hackers that signed up in 2005 continue to expire you will continue to see a significant drop from existing subs in the next 2 Q's
