BEV outside of Canada?

Hey! I am moving to Panama in 2 weeks. They get direct tv, but it's pretty limited from what I can tell(??) Here's the poop: I need my fix of Coronation Street every week and I'd also like BBC Canada -- so we're looking to bring an expressvu receiver down with us. Has anyone tried this? Any limitiations? I don't currently have expressvu, so I don't want to shell out $ and be held to a year contract and it not work. Sorry if this has already been discussed, if so, could someone send me a link? ;) Or a link to other international options? Thanks in advance!!!
 
Bev outside Canada has certainly been discussed although more in the Caribean. My gut is you'll be too far south since the signals are really aimed at North America.

Perhaps someone around here can point you to a coverage map.

FYI: Bell will not knowlingly provide service to someone outside Canada

That is an old footprint for EV (N1 only.) Some transponders do not even reach the southern US these days. Panama certainly won't work. I'm sure there are satellites that service Central America. Some of them may carry BBC and US stations.

There is a British service that sells access to BBC, etc on the internet. You could try that. BT is another option.
 
I believe it was mentioned in the previous threads on BEV down south that StarChoice goes further south. Not sure about that and not sure if they have the programming you desire.
 
I don't know how accurate that map is. I was on a Coast Guard ice-breaker in the Beaufort Sea (white on that map) in 2004 and we picked up BEV just fine.

I was on again in February of this year, but they have switched to StarChoice now.
 
I know someone in Ft Lauderdale that is getting BEV. It was just hooked up last week. Panama is further south, of course...

Have you looked on the BBC website to see if they stream it? All you would need is a proxy to access it (they only stream in Britain).

I have a Slingbox, and it is a great option, as well.
 
I have a Slingbox setup at my parent's place in Toronto, works great for me watching from down here in Australia. Obviously it works best if you have a really decent connection though.

Not really, it's about 22,300 miles above it :)

All geostationary satellites (such as used for TV and communications) are in a similar orbit with minimum 2 degree spacing.
 
This is all assuming you do not need 82w, which has its own challenges as well...
 
Think about setting up a Slingbox at a friends house.

It works very well. This is how my son watches TV at uni. Plus, it's all legal.
 
Like mentioned above. You can get a friend of yours to slingbox a signal from Canada... You would need one of Bell's fastest DSL service probally, or if your lucky and find someone in Quebec that can get the new Videotron Ultimate High speed with 50Mbs Down speed and I forget the upspeed but it's really fast too.
