I am looking at a Trek 1100 road bike which the seller says he bought used but is still in the boxes and unassembled. He will sell it unassembled for $125 or assembled/road ready for $175.

The other bike I am looking at is a Trek 800 mountain bike with a new chain, new seat, new inner tubes, and a new pump for $140. I wanted a road bike like the 1100 but I'm not sure which of these two is a better deal (I'm on a tight budget).

So which would be better to get? I'm 5'6" with a 27" inseam so I'm not sure if either bike is not the right size (I have not looked at either in person).

Well the most important thing is do you want a mountain bike more or a road bike more. Other things to consider is your surroundings. Are there no trails, if not get the road bike, if yes get the mountain bike.

I would suggest you get the mountain bike because most road riders started out with a mountain bike to get used to the road terrain. Then they slowly change to a rigid fork and then a real road bike. It's just something to think of. Plus when you're going off a 3in curb or there's a bump on the road, you won't feel as much pressure on your wrist as you would if you ride a mountain bike.
