Better guitarists: Now v Then

I honestly think that the solo is starting to make a comeback....I hear alot more banRAB that are incorporating solos into their songs...even if they arent even close to the length that they were back in the day....either way i think there are alot more talented guitarists out there than what we all realize...

What about people like Don Ross? Tommy Emmanuel? Andy Mckee? Antoine Dufour? Chet Atkins?

I think they are quite the talented guitarists as well as flawless musicians.

the only new guitarist that i really think can be compared to the older guitarists is John Mayer. Mostly because his music sort of devoloped off of the greats like SRV, Clapton, and Beck.

Joe Satriani was the reason I got started playing guitar. I'm 24 now and I've been a loyal fan since Jr. High, I have all of his studio releases and most of his live ones, including the rare and unreleased stuff. Seen him live 4 times.

Yep, I'm a fan.

and a seconding notion for the aforementioned:
John Petrucci
Buckethead
Jeff Beck (more on the "then" category but he's still awesome)
Eric Johnson
Steve Vai
Yngwie Malmsteen (was good back in the day, now he's just a fat alcoholic has-been and his playing sucks)
Omar Rodgriguez-Lopez

Jazz:
Grant Green
Kenny Burrell
Wes Montgomery

there are great guitarists today that all excel at their own style

john petrucci obviously is a great guitarist (saw him at this year's G3), very technical though and not as much 'soul' if you will.

on the opposite end of spectrum, david gilmour of pink floyd plays simple riRAB that pack a lot of power

omar from the mars volta is really good, reminRAB me of led zeppelin except more freeform, if that is possible.

radiohead has great guitarists... i enjoy the 'wall of sound' layering effects they create with tri-guitar parts

you left out buddy guy and bbking for then.

and for now i still think john mayer is one of the best guitarists around today. he played the system and won.
