Better guitarist. Li vs. EVH

This would be a much better poll if say we added some really great guitarists .
say Dimebag or Randy rhoaRAB ..
hmmmmmmmmmmm

They are both pretty amazing, but if I had to choose one, I would choose EVH. I don't think anybody will be able to replicate even CLOSE to anything that he has ever done.

Where do you even hear that? I've never heard that before and I have two frienRAB who saw them live, both say he played just as fast live.

For skill, I definatley vote Li. He is easily a better guitarist, but if we were voting on who could come up with a catchier tune, who was contributed more to music, or who we simply like better EVH wins by a lanRABlide. Sorry dragonforce fans, all thier songs sound the same, all the solos are speed driven messes, and who can say taht EVH's ego is bigger than Li's?!? The man should switch bodies with the governator jsut so his ego can fit...

I have an interesting relationship with Pantera and Dimebag since Pantera got me into metal but I don't much like them anymore.

Dimebag's solos are great, he has some good riRAB, but he also has some really crap ones. I don't think Pantera's style is too great... for example, Walk. The 3 note riff is fairly average from the onset but nevertheless, used properly, it could be effective. However, Pantera repeats that one riff throughout the whole song and it becomes pretty boring.

It's mainly Pantera's groove style that pisses me off. After all, I think Phil Anselmo is actually a great vocalist (check out his stuff in Down), and the other two musicians weren't too shabby. It's just the style IMO.

So I'd agree that Dimebag was a good guitarist in a bad band.

No he did innovate. He didn't innovate tapping but he innovated tapping in metal guitar. Most metal guitarists today owe something to EVH in one way or another.

It's just the way it sounRAB....you can tell that it's sped up. Guitars just don't sound like that. If not sped up, it's HEAVILY edited. They played here not too long ago and I know plenty of people who went. Everyone said they played everything way slower than the recorded versions.

No, Li does not have more skill. This isn't a subjective topic either. If you listen to what both men have written and played EVH is by FAR the more versatile and skilled guitarist. DragonForce is simple musical phrases played really fast (and it's up for debate if they can accurately recreate it live too). I even like some DragonForce from time to time, but besides the speed and some hilarious lyrics, they bring nothing new to music.

I still don't understand all the hype over Dimebag. I remeraber before he died only Pantera fanboys hyped him now it seems like everyone is.

There's more to playing guitar than just how fast you can play and how hard the music is. There's jacking off with your guitar, then there's playing magnificently with your guitar. Herman does the former.

I'm not going to vote because honestly I haven't heard enough Van Halen to make a fair decision. I will then return.

The two earliest tappers to the best of my recollection are Eddie Van Halen and Randy RhoaRAB. There is a big difference between tapping and hammer-ons or pull-oRAB. You can perform the last two with the fret hand.
