My husband and I are looking at buying new bikes for riding around town and some easy trail riding. I am planning on buying the Forge Devon CM from Target online. My husband is trying to decide between the Forge Sawback Hardtail 5xx from Target online and the Diamondback Edgewood from a LBS. Does anyone have any suggestions or recommendations? We want to spend between $300 and $400 for his first bike. We really can't decide between the two, please help!
It does not come assembled from Target Online but we are planning on taking it to a LBS and having them assemble it. :)

The Forge bikes are great for the money. I have the Saranac and it's great on the rail trails amd paved bike paths. The diamondback may be better for tail and road ridding with the 700c tires. Mountain bikes are not very comfortable on the road unless you change the tires.

Buying a bike from your LBS has a number of advantages, including professional staff who will help size and adjust the bike to him (if they won't go to another LBS). This will greatly enhance his comfort while on the bike and consequently the distance and frequency he rides. The LBS bike will be lighter and better set up. When purchasing the bike from Target online, do you have to assemble it? LBS mechanics know the little nuances to look for when assembling bikes that maximize your ease of ride.
