hey, i bought a betta fish three days ago. (his name is zandyr) it looked like he had a little bit of fin rot today. i went to the pet store, and bought the meds for him. i also picked up a ten gallon tank, new rocks and some pretty plants for his tank. i also picked up a divider and another male betta (whose name is Xavier) when i got home i set up the tank and got the fish used to it. i also put the meds in. ive noticed something a little off though. my sister also bought a betta three days ago and he is in a separate tank. he is a very active little guy. but my two bettas only stay at the bottom and are hardly ever active. is it from the stress of new tanks and tank mates, or of being sick? what should i do to cheer my little guys up? and make them more active?
they both are in a stable temperature of between 76 -78 degrees farenheight.
the divider isnt see through, so i dont think thats what is causing the problem. thanks for the answer about the fin rot thought. i was starting to think that i had caused it even though the tank is spotless.
what type of stress coat would you suggest? and also what type of filter is the best?
how would you go about cycling a tank?
yes the water is conditioned. the new one i got today was sick as well... and being an amateur i figured i might as well treat them both in the same tank. oh how i dislike the betta cups at petsmart.
is there something i should put in the tank to make them a little bit more active? or give them something to look at or play with?

Betta fish are known as the Chinese fighting fish so the probably don't like each other!

Even with a divider if it's clear, they can still see each other and try to fight or can get stressed out. You didn't mention a filter. He does need a filter but a small light flow filter is best. They don't swim well in currents. It's best to have him alone in the 10 gallon. I really think he will be much happier and healthier and more active if you just keep one in the 10 gallon. The fin rot was probably from sitting in a bowl of his own waste in the petstore, and with the use of a stress coat and meds, he should fully recover.

If you have a divider aggression is probably not your problem... but is the tank cycled? I would guess not since you picked up the tank after buying the fish. If you don't know about the nitrogen cycle that could certainly be the problem. If the tank is cycled the fish are probably just in shock from the move.

If you haven't done so already... I would recommend reading up on the nitrogen cycle... that is the key to good fish keeping.
