Beta fish makes noises every night?

Every night around 3 am my beta fish makes these really weird, and pretty loud clicking noises. The fish is a classroom fish who was not treated the "best" at times during the school year, and I'm taking care of him over the summer. By not the best, I mean that some people would throw stuff in his tank and he didn't always get cleaned as much as he should, but right now he is under good care and is well.

So, what are these noises? There is no food in the tank, so he is not eating, but the noises sound like when he is eating. Could he be having nightmares from the trauma of living in a classroom for a year?
it doesn't even have to be quiet. When I feed them, I have two, they make grinding and clicking noises as they chew. I never knew that they did it until mine did. It's quite loud, for a fish.

My beta does that too! usually when it's really quiet (tv off, no music, you're there chatting:)) i think it gets bored, it's thriving attention:)
i normally pick up its tank and place it on the desk next to me, the noises will stop, but it'll be WATCHING you like there's no tomorrow.. whichever is the less freaky thing to deal with, you do it:)

Fish Nightmares... that's funny... whatever...

I'm pretty sure its the betta making bubbles.. its from him going to the surface taking a gasp of air and then releasing the air making bubbles... it must be pretty quite in your room...

Do your Betta fish chirp? Betta fish have been known to make various sounds. Fish in general make a lot of sounds, but most of them we can't hear - mostly just other fish hear them. I have heard popping and splashing mostly - at various levels of volume and different frequencies (some more high-pitched or low-pitched).

oooooh...thats freaky. im not sure if a fish is supposed to make a noise so loud you can hear it...thats freaky...

i dont know, sorry. ask the pet store (thats what i always tell people when i dont know the answer/whats happening).
