Best Westerns you can recommend

My favourites:



Sergio Leone's "Dollars Trilogy" with Clint Eastwood -

"A Fistful of Dollars" (effectively a remake of Akira Kurosawa's classic "Yojimbo")

"For a Few Dollars More"

"The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly"



Clint Eastwood's Oscar winning classic from 1992, "Unforgiven"



Sam Peckinpah's excellent 1969 Western, "The Wild Bunch"



John Sturges' "The Magnificent Seven" (a remake of Kurosawa's excellent "Seven Samurai")

I also quite like "High Plains Drifter", "The Outlaw Josey Wales", and "Pale Rider"... all Clint Eastwood vehicles.
 
Thanks for those. I've now ordered the Wild Bunch and The Unforgiven....my son has the Clint Eastwood's.

Any older films that you rate? My sons have got into Westerns and I'm trying to find ones that they haven't got without wasting money on rubbish.
 
"High Noon"... can't believe I left that off my first post. Gary Cooper classic from 1952.

If your sons also like foreign films, I'd recommend the two Japanese ones I mentioned which were later remade as Westerns: "Yojimbo" (remade as "A Fistful of Dollars") & "Seven Samurai" (remade as "The Magnificent Seven").


Re "Unforgiven"... The Clint Eastwood movie is just "Unforgiven". "The Unforgiven" is a different Western.


Oh, & how about a comedy Western? Mel Brooks' "Blazing Saddles" is great :D
 
Have ordered High Noon, not sure about the Japanese ones, just because they have asked for American Westerns.

And I did order Unforgiven...just checked!

I'm happy to have other movie suggestions from you film buRAB, they like war films too. Actually they're mad on films, thats why I'm looking for older movies because they've got all the recent stuff.
 
You could look at Dances With Wolves
As for war films, one of my favourites is Kelly's Heroes, its funny too, thats if a war film can be funny. ( Donald Sutherland as Oddball is great, a sort of pre 60's hippie.)

Where Eagles Dare - Clint Eastwood
Cross of Iron - Sam Peckinpah's finest

On topic, try Shane, it's a real tear-jerker, ditto The Three Godfathers - fantastic movie :)

Whenever I've seen excerpts from Shane it's always looked, as you say, a real tear jerker. Do you think they'd like it?
 
Just thougt of another one, The Professionals starring Burt Lancaster, Lee Marvin, Woody Strode and Robert Ryan on a mission to rescue Claudia Cardinale from a Mexican revolutionary played by Jack Palance. The film also has one of my favourite last lines in a movie.
 
Yes, John Wayne is in 3 Godfathers, I suppose you could call it a Western version of Three Men and a Baby only a lot more poignant, with religious undertones. But I love it.

As for Shane, I think anyone would like it, especially if they are fond of children, the little boy is so cute and a wonderful little actor. Oh and Alan Ladd is pretty cute too....he was my mum's heart-throb!
