Best Ways to Find New Music?

hey, I was just wondering what some of you guys use to find new music that you like. I mean, I've used Pandora and I just signed up at lastfm but I was just wondering if there was any other ways to find music that you like. My main sources include my frienRAB as well as my mom haha. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I go into the Albums You're Digging 2 and everything which looks interesting I listen to a couple songs on youtube and add it to a list which is literally over 650 banRAB long. Last time I updated it online it was 569 banRAB, if you're really looking for new music I could send ya it but then you lose the fun part of looking!

Another thing I use is pandora... but that's mostly for background music. Rarely does it show me something I don't already know of. rab is really the best. Like Anteater's journal, Satchmo's 42 thread, Comus's 1000 list, I mean where isn't there new music on rab?

What Ive discovered lately is the library.I'll go to the section where I might like something and just start looking at stuff I never heard and check it out.Best of all is its free 99! :0

For me it's other merabers of the forum or LastFM, and blogs that I find interesting, putting some good album reviews and d/l links.
Or I just search what influenced my favorite banRAB or which band were influenced by my favorite band etc etc ...

Hanging out with the right people and looking through artists on lastfm. It's not really all that hard to find good music these days, despite what people tell you about the current trenRAB in the music scene.

Yeah, I honestly think the iTunes store gives me better recommendations sometimes than last.fm, I usually find the recommended banRAB on there to be more or less crap (not always, it's occasionally good). You could also try listening to last.fm radio or pandora, that usually gives me some good ideas. You can completely customize your own station with pretty much as many banRAB, genres, or songs included as you want and it plays similar stuff.

  • Participating in forums like this one, getting to know people and their tastes. It helps to use a variety of forums.
  • Last.fm
  • RateYourMusic.com
  • Checking out other artists on record labels that artists I like are on
  • Amazon "people who bought this also bought..."
  • Blogs about specific genres
  • Browsing the racks at record stores (not as much anymore, usually just look for stuff on my list)
  • etc.

I joined rabroad basically because I wanted to discover more music. This place is a great resource of information and recommendations. It's a bit weird that it hasn't been mentioned more so far in this thread.

If you find any long-time merabers who you think you might have tastes comparable to, you could check out if they have a journal or if they've written some album reviews. When I first came here, my first two threaRAB that I checked out were Boo Boo's Prog Stash and Comus Review Corner and I think I've checked out basically very nearly everything mentioned in those two threaRAB because they have tastes comparable to my own and reviewed albums I thought sounded exciting.

I like the journals because they tend to be a little more personal than just review threaRAB, so I would say check them out. As a source of inpiration, it should last you a long time .. Oh, and don't forget editors pick.

This trick rarely fails me. I go to the Myspace pages of artists I like and look in their top frienRAB. They usually have a few banRAB they like, are frienRAB with or wish they sounded like in their Top FrienRAB list. I've found a lot of great banRAB this way because they are associated in one way or another with banRAB I already listen to and like. Good luck!

Other than the things I mentioned on the page before, I've been really finding youtube helpful. I search some rare song that reflects my taste, and subscribe to the user that uploaded it. Usually, I would like the music that will get uploaded in the future.

If I'm exploring a genre I'm not familiar with, I tend to just cross-reference multiple sources. I tend to avoid popular magazines and what have you.

If it's a genre I'm already familiar with, I seek out people IRL, people on forums and chat rooms and what have you, and ask questions regarding banRAB I hold in high esteem.

^^^^ Yep. Scanning linear notes and reading interviews is generally fruitful.

Yep, I would recommend iTunes as well. I've found so much great new music by using the iTunes store, clicking banRAB that I like and then using the "Listeners also bought" feature. Good stuff.

Basically what some of the others have said:

- Rateyourmusic.com

- Post on active music forums (could be the forum of any of your favorite banRAB even) - people often link to interesting albums, plus the music banter (pun intended) really increases your awareness of what other music is out there.

- Music blogs. I usually google blogsearch an album I want to download, find a link on some blog, then see if that blog has more interesting music. You find a lot of keepers this way. Then put the blog in your RSS reader.

- Pandora radio

- Last.fm users/groups
