Best way to work my muscles?

Right now I am working out every other day, doing push ups, sit ups, and whatever else. I want to trim the fat, and get a six pack and all. Not much fat really. My friend says the best way to work my abs would be to do it every other day. Is he right? And should I run every day or what to burn the calories and cut fat?
