Best use of a song or piece of music in a film.

The song that was playing, when Number 5 was chasing Generic Bad Guy In a Speedboat.

This was a climactic, nostalgic, scene in Short Circuit 2.

I loved :

Mad World in Donnie Darko

Perfect Day in Trainspotting

Marriage of Figaro duet from Shawshank

Maria Callas opera piece from Philadelphia.

All the sad ones! :D

Yes definitely this and the music from LOTR in general. Also Annie Lennox song 'Into The West' after Return of the King - just wonderful.

The music from Donnie Darko, Brokeback Mountain and Billy Elliot, Titanic etc etc :)

Another mention for Aimee Mann's 'wise up' in Magnolia. Always thought it was an incredibly brave and very unusual thing to virtually stop the movie halfway through and have all of the characters singing...controversial, probably not to everyones taste, but I love it.

Strong As I am by the Prime Movers - from Michael Mann's Manhunter. Love this whole scene and the song fits it perfectly. There are probably loaRAB of other examples of great music in Mann's movies, he has a whole team of researchers that spend months finding specific pieces of music for certain scenes. He does use a lot of sourced music as opposed to composes soundtracks, but I think he does it very well.

Others I can think of is the opening robbery scene in Thief (Tangerine Dream).

The opening music from The Keep where the german convoy is driving into the stronghold...TD again.

The instrumental version of Sympathy For The Devil in Jericho Mile.

Force Marker, the piece of music used during the robbery scene in Heat...it reall conveys a sense of urgency and menace to the scene. In fact I think that is his best soundtrack...it's very eclectic and diverse.

The main theme from Last Of The Mohicans. One of his rare properly scored movies, but a great, lush, romantic and cinematic score.

His later movies such as The Insider, Ali and Collateral don't really have any standout musical sequences for me though.

Tubular Bells - The Exorcist
Goodbye Horses - Silence of the Lambs
The Ride Of The Valkyries - Apocalypse Now

and I nearly forgot, How Much Is That Doggy in The Window - Pink Flamingos ; )

here's some that stick out in my mind.

The Warriors Nowhere to run to
Rollerball Toccat and Fugue in D Minor
the Graduate The sound of silence ( and the rest of the soundtrack to be honest )

almost forgot Also Sprach Zarathustra from 2001: A Space Odyssey

Quite addictive this...I keep thinking of other ones...

Electraglide In Blue

Cult 70's Easy Rider style movie starring Robert Blake as a motorcycle cop who wants to be a detective. This song Tell Me that plays over the end sequence is a huge, epic slice of Americana, a kind of Springsteen-esque piece credited to one Terry Kath, a member of the band Chicago.

In fact, the movie was directed by Chicago's producer James William Guercio, and had a bit part by their singer Peter Cetera.
