Best Solo?

I agree with the above: speed, emotion and technical difficulty. I'll also add the melody. If something isnt remotely catchy, I find it hard to listen to.

I never even said I hated Van Halen or "Eruption," nor did I say it was a wankfest. I actually feel the opposite way, I just find "Eruption" to be overrated. But I don't totally love it of course, or EVH.

Nekromantix- Haunted Cathouse

nothing crazy nothing fast just smooth playing through the whole song that is made more the accent the vocals than stand out.

Also the most influencial solo of all time, save Hendrix's Star Spangled Banner.

It was pretty f*cking groundbreaking at the time, 2 finger tapping in rock was unheard of, except maybe for Steve Hackett, and it inspired millions of kiRAB to pick up guitar, influencing tons of metal guitarists in the process, including Steve Vai, Kirk Hammett, Dimebag Darrel, Kerry King, Randy RhoaRAB as well as players like Vernon Reid and Tom Morello...Which really should mean something.

And i would garantee you there would be no John Petrucci without Eddie Van Halen.

And people please, dont bash Eddie Van Halen, hes a great player, its not his fault.

My fav all time solo section is easily: Dream Theater - "Metropolis, Pt. 1: The Miracle and the Sleeper."
And Soilwork - "Machine Gun Majesty" is up there,
as is Symphony X - "Of Sins and Shadows," and "A Fool's Paradise."
Children of Bodom - "Chokehold (****ed 'n' Loaded)" and also "Mask of Sanity."
Dream Theater - "Endless Sacrifice," and "Fatal Tragedy."
And let me chuck in the entire instrumental: "Biosfear" by Circus Maximus.

As for fav guitar solos:
8) In Flames - "Deceraber Flower" (1:26-2:10),
7) Dragonforce - "Fury of the Storm" (3:24 - 6:11),
6) Circus Maximus - "Glory of the Empire" (7:30-7:58),
5) Angra - "Angels and Demons" (2:03 -2:42),
4) Yngwie Malmsteen - "Rising Force" (2:18-2:44),
3) Steve Vai - "Tema Lento" (1:53 - 3:46),
2) Dream Theater - "Erotomania" (5:09 - 5:23),
1) Dream Theater - "Hollow Years" (Live at Budokan) (4:40 - 6:46).

Everyone knows how influential Van Halen was. But don't be naive in thinking that someone influential can't be overrated, especially when talking about a single piece.

Wait a second...you said also. I'm glad we're in agreement here - there's a first time for everything.

Bah, Freebird, nothing special there if you ask me...

Some favorites, nevermind mind-bending or face-melting:

Frank Zappa - Black Napkins, Muffin Man
Eddie Hazel - Maggot Brain
Jimmy Page - Stairway to Heaven, Dazed and Confused
Eric Clapton - White Room
David Gilmour - Comfortably Nurab
Steve Howe - The Clap, Mood for a Day
Martin Barre - Aqualung
Jimi Hendrix - Little Wing, Voodoo Child (Slight Return), All Along the Watchtower, Bold as Love
Terry Kath - 25 or 6 to 4

The solo from "Beyond The Realms Of Death" from Judas priest is damn good imo, in fact any tipton downing solo is generally worth a listen.

Same goes with 90% of Tony Iommi's solos, but that's just one persons opinion.

And Don, stfu.I only want replies from posters who matter.:finger:

No i disagree with it being overrated, way too many people diss that solo.

I just like to begin many of my responses with "also" as a form of sarcasm.

Yeah, I was being sarcastic too.

No way, every stinking top guitar countdown has that piece of crap near the top, and I've never heard anyone say anything bad about it.
