Best slick/hybrid mountain bike tires?

brilliant

I want the best set or combination of tires mainly for speed on pavement, but also light off road use. I saw a bike with a bmx-dirt looking tread on the front and a slick on the back... Or maybe it was the other way around. Anyway, would that be a good combo for me? Specific make/models?

I think there are two options for you. The one is to get a narrower tire (26x1.75 or even 1.5) with a smooth ridge of about 1/4" thickness that runs down the middle of the tread and then some small knobby ridges towards surrounding it. The other is quite smooth in the middle of the tire about 1 inch wide with knobs on the outer edges. These tires are often installed on new comfort bikes and usually 26x1.95. They roll real easy on pavement and the knobs on the outer edges will give you traction for that occasional crushed gravel ride.

These are pretty good for the road and the dirt. I put a set on my bike and they are a lot better then knobbies.
