Best Shonen Hero Currently?

I nominate Edward Elric and Allen Walker. Edward is a true badass and he unlike his other colleagues is smart instead of stupid and immature(even though he gets a little pissed at being short). Then theres Allen which I think is too polite to be a shonen hero but his optisim and rlationship with Yu Lavi and Lena Lee is awesome.

Monkey D. Luffy - For essentially being what he has been since Oda put him to paper, and is a hero who despite all the odRAB set against him (especially what happened before Impel Down) he has yet to compromise who he is, and that's worth a lot of merit.

Well yeah, but you got to admit, him staying the same for over 500 chapters and not developing shread of human and logical feelings makes him very one demensional. Luffy's like Superman, perfect in everyway but lacks the depth of a true hero.

IMO, this is why Ed and Allen are better heroes IMO.

Gorgeously written. Nothing more can be said.

Through the rage of the sea to the depths of hell, Luffy is on a rampage not even the Hulk could hope to match.

He's not one dimensional. He has distinct flaws and he does have human and logical feelings, if you've been paying attention at all in the series. If anything, he's the most well-characterized. That's what One Piece is strong for. Well characterized characters that won't change. They're just going to experience. It goes with the saying, "People don't change, but the world around them, however - does."

With that said, I agree. I'm going with Monkey D. Luffy. Not only well-written. He's consistent.

Luffy is nuraber one but I'd say Tsuna from Reborn is a close second as he's really matured from chapter 1. (the anime still makes him out to be a wimp though)

Honorable mention to Natsu from Fairy Tail.

Even on hold HunterXHunter is still considered current right?

So there's Gon!

I also must say I really like Natsu of Fairy Tail. Gutsy heroes FTW!

Sena matured a lot since the begining of Eyeshield 21.

Leo Aiolia from Saint Seiya Episode G! That counts as shonen right?

Gon from Hunter X Hunter is way more calm and level-headed than most other shounen heroes of today, which gives him a big positive quality in my book (granted that HXH is on hiatus, but its still an ongoing manga, and therefore it still counts as a current series).

I also am somewhat charmed by Monkey D. Luffy's carefree yet innocent and likable personality.

Now, if I mention someone like Kenichi from HSDK (the manga is still ongoing), I know that I'm really kind of stretching it, since he is a pretty cliche and formulaic character in many ways, and I'm not quite sure if he has even reached "hero" status yet (though, he has saved lives and protected other people on many occasions, so that's enough qualification for me), but compared to the common shounen heroes of this generation, I can easily say that he manages to be much more interesting than them. Since he's been known to lack any sort of real fighting talent, I like how he has to train hard and use his head in order to overcome his opponents, which allows him to truly grow as a character. Its better than just getting some last minute special training, or even worse, an out-of-nowhere power-up, in order to take down an opponent who is multiple times stronger and more experiences than he is. It also makes his victories feel that much more rewarding to see.

Oda said he wanted Luffy to be simple and straight forwarded as possible. I don't see any multiple sides to Luffy because he's to linear to make me see his true charm. He's not the most well characterized in One Piece, his whole crew is however. The flaws he has aren't very impactful to his character, he's loved by everyone he meets and respected as well, he never feels fear or self doubt, he always finRAB a way to previal. Well he is hurable I give him that. He's just a pure hearted and reckless deus ex machina whom in his world always has the best luck. IMO

I like him though. But I like the Full Metal more.

Well the thread isn't really about whose personality hasn't changed but since we're going into that tangent didn't Gon, in the more recent Japanese chapters, undergo a huge shift in personality making him less carefree, and more serious?

To me Luffy is an improvement over the way Goku was characterized in DBZ by making Luffy care about his frienRAB and others and having far more loyalty to them.

Personally I'd say Luffy, probably.

But that's by my own opinion. I love his personality. He's so child-like, and he is easily amused by a lot of things, which makes the series more fun and hilarious.

And of course, he has his "serious business" attitude, where he will do anything regardless of the consequences. It makes him all of the cooler.

Luffy without a doubt for reasons already well-adressed by others here. On the subject of Edward Elric while I like him, I never really considered him to be all that heroic as it seems that helping people is secondary to the goal of finding the philosoper's stone and getting Al's body back for most the FMA series. If any thing I'd say Alphonse is the more heroic of the two.

meh. I have trouble empathing (is that even a word?) with Luffy. Something about him just doesn't click with me. Maybe I just haven't followed enough of the serie for it to work its charm on me...

One Piece just doesn't do it for me.

Current shonen hero? (The ongoing stuff right?) That's pretty hard since the only shonen series I read is One Piece, Naruto and Bleach. (And on some ocassions Fairy Tail.) I've been meaning to check out Hunter x Hunter, but never got around to doing so.

Instead of listing one person, I'm just going to state my opinion on some characters.... "coughs" (I might step on a few toes though. )

With that said, the only person I can really choose is Luffy. It took quite a bit for him to grow onto me because his recklessness was really annoying, but what ultimately won me over was his dedication to his crew. (I could say Natsu as well but this at point, the only airhead I'm really putting up with is Luffy.) I don't know how Oda managed to pull it off because any other time I'm practically sick of seeing the "frienRABhip" theme incorporated into just about everything, but here in One Piece I actually appreciate it. Go figure.

Naruto - I'm going to bypass. We all know I cannot stand him, and I won't go into anymore.

Ichigo (Bleach) - He started out as a strong leading character. Some where down the line, I don't know where, but he just fell off. I want to say it was during his fight with Dordoni. (sp?) It's like he just turned stupid all of a sudden.

Ed (FMA) - Heh, I can't stand him. (Nor Al for that matter.) However, I will admit that he has his funny moments. But yeah, um, this boy is like the biggest brat I've ever seen in anime. (I really was glad to see Envy do him in.) Everytime he couldn't get what he want would piss me off because he'd throw a little hissy fit, and I'm like "ARGH!". Actually I take that back. Ed's the 2nd biggest brat I've seen in anime. (The first spot belongs to Tetsunosuke.)

Edit: Also, I gotta say I'm more into the villains and secondary characters more than the heroes, that is when it comes to the current shonen types. (Kenshin and Yusuke > all.)
