I think 'The Silence of the Lambs' is hard to top, but what others have impressed you?

Here are some for starters:

The Boston Strangler
Seven
Saw
The Cell (suprisingly)
Halloween
Peeping Tom
Black Christmas

Incidentally, has anyone seen The Toolbox Murders remake? I just saw it in Woolies and was tempted to buy - got it got quite good reviews here...

Also i have to admit that the documentary on BTK shown on Ch5 the other night was pretty damn creepy.

Halloween, Black Christmas fall into the slasher sub-genre, but yeah still excellent films.

Toolbox Murders remake was okay, nothing amazing, better than the original in all the other departments after gore.

One of my favourites is a Korean film called Tell Me Something, got a Seven feel to it, as well as another Korean film called H.

Peeping Tom was excellent, it was on latenight tv a few weeks ago, glad I caught it.

Apart from Silence of the Lambs, The Texas chainsaw Massacre would get my vote.

The TCM was a strange one - never seen so many individuals "cackling" in one room in my life.

Saw one called "Body Count" when I was a kid - frightening at the time, not sure what I'd make of it now though.

Seven is great, I would say it was the best but Brad Pitt is so annoying in it.
I like him in Fight Club but not in Seven. Morgan Freeman was class as always, which probably made Pitt seem worse than he was.

Hmm. Very best would have to be S7ven or however the Hell you spell it. Well written, imaginative, (mostly) well acted and dark as ditch water. American Psycho comes a close second though.

I haven't seen The Hitcher in years but I do remember enjoying it. Does it still hold up?

I've recently watched a shedload of movies based on real life killers, including Bundy, Dahmer and Ed Gein. Somehow these films didn't stand up for me, maybe because I had read so much about these maniacs beforehand. The real life case of Jeff Dahmer is so chilling and bizarre that perhaps it is impossible for a movie to do it justice (read The Shrine of Jeffrey Dahmer by Brian Masters and you will see what I mean).

Other books that I would like to see on the big screen include...

Exquisite Corpse by Poppy Z Brite (also Lost Souls)
Killing for Company - Brian Masters
In Cold Blood - Truman Capote

I must admit to loving Scream (all of them got the box-set lol)
also really liked the new House of wax which I saw yesterday

Hi Cuttlefishspike, someone else who seems to enjoy the same reading material as myself. I've read killing for company, and have the shrine of jeffrey dahmer but haven't got round to reading it yet. have you read the book his father wrote? it's very good. the other one i've read recently is wicked beyond belief, the hunt for the yorkshire ripper, very detailed about the crimes and the investigation, one of the best serial killer books i've read.

As for serial killer movies, monster has to be one of the best, goes beyond portraying her as a cold blooded killer, and makes her a real person, that you can actually have some sympathy for.

'black christmas' is v scary - that creepy baby voice on the phone...*shudder*

i quite like 'copycat' with holly hunter and sigourney weaver, a bit OTT but the acting of the 2 women is absolutely fantastic

also obviously 'halloween' and do you remember 'when a stranger calls'?

Seven & Natural Born Killers.

I'd also mention the Death Wish series - Paul Kersey (I think that was Charles Bronson's characeter name), was a sort of serial killer, albeit for different reasons to normal.
