Best phone for teen?

Trying to decide which phone to upgrade to for teenager! Trying to decide between the Htc Aria & Samsung Captivate?

Those are both smartphones, and will require the internet service. Are you looking at a smartphone, or a messaging phone?
 
I guess a smartphone, comparable to an iphone, which is what she would like but is more than I can afford, so I'm looking at something that is a good deal upon adding a new line like the htc aria which is being offered free http://mobile-store.dell.com/htc-aria-for-at-t-7527.html
 
The Aria is a good little phone if you can get past the battery life. If it's used a lot (gaming, texting), it will need to be charged a couple times a day. I have a few friends (girls in their 20's and 30's) who love their Arias.

I had the Captivate and while it has a huge screen, I wasn't as impressed with it as I was with the smaller Aria.
