Hi All, new member here and need help in choosing the best cell phone that can do full html internet browsing and with MP3 capability. Does any cell phone do full html internet browsing? Or do I have to go to a PDA with phone capability?

I currently have a Moto V3x and looking to upgrade. Price is not really an issue.

Thanks in advance!

Well I know any series 60 phone can do full html browsing with the download of the Opera program. A quick review of Opera mini's site shows that it should pull standard html pages, so you can download that onto a Sony Ericson and be fine. They have the best mp3 sound / capability so far.

any of the walkmen phones would be great for mp3

and any nokia s60 phone would work as he said

depending on what you need

question - What carrier are you with?

if your with cingular your choices for s60 will be limited as most are for europe and lack the 850 band that you need on cingular

one phone that i would say would be the BEST would be the N80 since it is quad band but it is not out yet

You might want to go to some online stores and check out the phones. Just saying you need a phone for internet and mp3 is pretty vague and I can rattle off over a 100 models leaving you with that frowny question mark head all day.

So, your best bet is to go to a place like www.wirelessimports.com (or any of the websites listed in the retailers forum) and look at actual models. Come back to the thread and say "the W800i is hot! Will it do X and Y?" Then we will respond "Why yes, but the n80 is better for Y, so you might want to get that". Otherwise you will always be confused.

It sounds shallow, but because your specifications are so broad, pick a phone you think is cool first, then ask about it's abilities. For just browsing and MP3 it will probably meet your needs

I'm with Cingular now and have the Moto V3x.

I just downloaded Opera Mini and it worked somewhat. When I exited out of the browser, then came back in, I had to re-download Opera again? It didn't use the Opera Mini as my default browser???

PLEASE explain - Okay so I'm a newbie.... What does it mean to have unlock and locked cell phones? There are tons of cell phones that I would like to try but my carrier (Cingular) does not have them. Can I buy it and then just swap the SIMM card if its an unlock phone?

Any phones with WiFi? What advantages are there with a WiFi cell phone?

cell phone carriers sell there phones in a locked mode not allowing them to be used with any carrier other then themselves (mostly for subsidizing reasons) however all GSM cell phones can be purchased in an unlocked state also which allows them to be used by any GSM provider.

Many phone can also be unlocked, some for free some for a small price some not at all (newest nokia smartphones)

now since you are on cingular when looking for a phone they main thing to need to look for is that it can be used on the 850 band

most phones are triband either 900/1800/1900 or 850/1800/1900 you need the second one or one that is quad band 850/900/1800/1900 (you just need the 850 part)

now for phones it depends how well you want to browse in full html

yes yuo can download the java based opera mini and use it on almost all phones and it is pretty nice. however i like the options and viewing ability of the 3 main s60 browsers Opera 8.5 Netfront 3.3 and ThunderHawk (do a google search for any of them)

now most phones nowadays have a built in mp3 player and from what i have read sony ericson is on top of the others but i personally have a nokia 6682 and with the built in app i think it sounds great (just get yourself the ad-15 adapter and a nice set of headphones)

WiFi is mainly for browsing the internet faster for streaming music and video much faster then you can over edge

Since you have said mony isnt really an object time is the only real concern probably the best phone (non pda type) that i can suggest would be the n80 a nokia slider s60 smartphone (google "n80 nokia") as most people will agree that phone is sexy in many ways :P only thing is that it isnt actually out yet

see..there we go.. a bit more specific.

Cingular folks need a phone that has the 850mhz band. Because Cingular is the only one that runs on that frequencey, usually, the only phones that have it are the phones they make for themselves. You can find other phones out there that have it, but they are few and far between.

Unlocked phones mean you can take out your sim card, put in a new one from a different company, and you are good to go. Buying a phone directly from Cingular will mean you bought a locked phone. If you put a tmobile sim card in that phone, then you could not use the phone. Unlocked phones increase the resale value of the phone as well as the usability (if you leave the country, etc.)

Wifi on phones - FOR THE MOST PART... the only use for wifi on a phone is to have faster downloads. Not really an issue unless you find yourself constantly in wifi hotspots and you do a TON of surfing / email / streaming media. TO A LESSER EXTENT... there are some phones that can do Voice Over IP, so you can actually use the wifi to make calls and then save your minutes. The Nokia E series (not out yet) will do this as well as some windows smartphones with Vonage. This is a luxury item that is probably not needed (except in the most extreme cases) so you shouldn't focus too much on a phone with this option.

I don't know how to use the V3x, but I am pretty sure you can't set Opera mini to use as the default browser. I may be wrong, but posting in the Motorola forum will be your best bet.

ALL of that being said:

If you have no problems spending $600+ on a phone and can wait. The N80 is your BEST option hands down. It will do everything you want plus more stuff you never thought you would want your phone to do.

Other phones in the non astronomical region are the Sony S710a (former Cingular phone, nice sound), and the Motorola V3i (upgrade to the V3x that adds itunes, more memory, and I think a better screen).

Check with cingular to see if you are in a dual covered area (850 and 1900) if you are you "could" get a 1900 only phone (a lot more options) but you will pay for the switch with a drop in coverage. I know a number of Cingular people who do this anyway because they are in the center of major cities where the 1900 coverage is "acceptable" and they don't mind the loss in RF for the boost in phone features.

Hope this helps... and those retailer sites that I mentioned before usually have carrier logos to let you know which phones will work with which carriers.

man.. that's what sucks about typing long responses.. you miss someone else's long response explaining the EXACT SAME THING...good job thando
