I can argue my Treo for business. It allows you to check email and the web and of course has the phone features.

I never thought I'd really like the keyboard but with the right software it's extremely more efficient over G1 or G2 or anyother "tap" input.

That's the best converged device that I would recommend.

Standalone PDA, - Sony Clie Th55 because of the wifi connection and battery life. I had one and it was great for that purpose.

T3 for landscape mode - if your going to be carrying around spreadsheets it's the only way to go but be prepared to carry a charger with you after each 8 hour work day because battery life -
unit won't last more than 1.5 days without being in the cradle.

Your question stated:

if your talking about syncing to an SQL server or other type of database scenario then that's a whole nother gambit. More info would be needed for me to supply the best answer but again on the surface: T3 because of the 64MB on board and the unlimited space to the SD cards. The T3 with it's processor speed would enable the fastest syncs to such a server as well.

Regardless, your business database will have to have some sort of sync software configured in order for you to access the server but you can import the data to a desktop station and then use various forms of software to sync.

This post may generate some other responses from some of my fellow board members. ;)

Overall I would take the Tungsten T3 for the PDA for business if you do not need Wireless email or need a smartphone.
It comes smack full of functions and options and gives you a wide choice and it is one of the fast palm pilot's in the market.
But like MooseMan said if you want Wifi you should go with the TH - 55 it has WiFi and alot more for what you pay for it but the only turn down is that sony is now not making anymore palm OS pilots for some time and it is going to be replaced real soon.

Anyway's it's your choice either way !

You will need to get a database application in addition to the actual PDA. Personally, I use a T3 with SmartList To Go installed. I store my teaching records in SmartList and it synchronizes with Microsoft Access. The program is pretty easy to use. There are other database programs on the market. However, I haven't tried them so I can't comment on them. HanDbase and Smartlist are the two most popular Palm database programs on the market.

Dwinget, Tungstenlover and Moose man have all recommended it, and I'll agree with them. The Palm Tungsten T3 is without a doubt one fo the best PDAs around today.

My reasons are as follows...

1. I'd go with Palm over Treo for the simple reason that IMHO, there exists better software for Palm than for Treo. Although they're both supposed to be sharing the same platform, a lot of programs Ive used dont have Treo support.

2. The Tungsten T3 screen is probably one of the best screens available today. I work for a tech firm, and handle their business development, and I frequently need to carry documents with me in PDF, Word, and Excel. The T3 displays them all flawlessly. My colleagues HP iPaq 1945 doesnt even come close.
The virtual silk-screen and full-sceen graffiti make text input a breeze. I havent had the need for a keyboard yet, but there are a ton of them available that work with the T3, and some of them connect to the T3 wirelessly.

3. Sure, the battery life could be better, but with some moderate usage, I can squeeze abt 3-1/2 days of juice out of the T3, no sweat.

4. Ive used it to connect to the net to research on the fly, and check my mail. I did this by using the bluetooth to sync it to my Nokia 8910 with GPRS, and then the Sony-E T610 that i replaced with Nokia with. Both BT connections were extremely stable.

5. Mp3s galore

6. Man, this thing is fast. Ive switched between applications like I was on crack cocaine, and the T3 took it all with aplomb.

7. This thing is tough. Ive accidentally dropped it once, onto a concrete floor, and the thing didnt even have a scratch on it. Mind you, early users of the T3 (and I'm one of them, but ive had no problems) have complained that the digitizer stops working, the screws holding the slider in place fall out (although this doesnt seem to affect the slider in any way)

8. After palm fixed the initial bug with the SD cards, the storage you can get with the SD cards is more than adequate. (I'm currently using 512 MB)

Hope this helps.

Palm Tungsten T3 is probably the best Palm OS PDA for business use - fast, easy to use, and has a large screen for easy viewing of Word & Excell documents. It has no wi-fi capability though, but works well with my Sony Ericsson T610 (Bluetooth to GPRS) for email, text mesages and data exchanges (anywhere I go without need for a hotspot).

Palm softwares for all purposes are available, and MobileDB is recommended for your database need. I have more business applications loaded here than my notebook and desktop PC, and I seldom need to carry a PC during trips. I can recommend specific Palm applications for your other requirements.
