Anime of the Year: Gurren Lagann

Gurren Lagann once again wins the biggest category and 8 categories overall, the most of any anime nominated for anything. Tell me if I missed anything. The winners shouldn't come as big surprises, but you can still post your thoughts on them. Also, did Anime Insider do this this year? If so, what were the categories and winners? Thanks.

It's fine, it's just that there were no votes for over a month right before the end of the year and then 2 people submitted all their votes on New Year's.

Well, it kind of sucks that Yu Yu Hakusho couldn't win for best anime on DVD, but I never expected it to, since its popularity pales in comparison to that of DBZ and One Piece. Its personally my favorite anime based off of a Shounen Jump manga, and my 2nd favorite anime, overall (right behind Cowboy Bebop). As far as manga go, my top 3 shounen jump manga (as well as my overall favorites), are Death Note, Rurouni Kenshin, and Hunter X Hunter (of course, Dragon Ball may take a place as one of my favorites, once I finish reading the entire manga). Oh, and speaking of Rurouni Kenshin, I'm at least glad that it won for best manga.

Still, as far as the DVD's go, while I'm sure that the One Piece DVD's are great, I can't deny that I would prefer 28 episodes of YYH for about $25, as opposed to 13 episodes of One Piece for about $50. I mean, I enjoy both series, but YYH is easily one of my all time favorites. I'm probably alone on that one, though.

As for TTGL, I can't really say that I'm into that series. I still can't really understood what people find to be so great about it, however, I'm not surprised that it won. I suppose I'm just the odd one, here, in not being able to get into it. Still, I wouldn't say that its a bad series, its simply just not my cup of tea, as I really didn't find it to be entertaining.

I'm really glad that Death Note won in the "Best Death" category, though. And what's even better is that its the death that I also found to be the most well done, in the series (well, it actually ties with another death in the series, when I think about it).

Oh, yeah, the price for Yu Yu Hakusho's DVRAB is INSANE. They're just the old releases repackaged (with HILARIOUSLY out of date trailers, I might add), but for less than a dollar per episode, you just can't go wrong.

True, but I honestly don't find trailers alone to be countable and bonus/extra content in the first place.

Seriously, though, while the lack of special features is somewhat disappointing to me, I pretty much agree with what you just said. If someone doesn't already own YYH on DVD, then they just can't go wrong with the season box sets.

Anime of the Year: Code Geass

Code Geass is great and all, but Gurren Lagann should've won Anime of the Year, and most of the other categories. If only there was a similar list in which that was the case... Oh wait, ours was like that. This is why Toon Zone is more trustworthy at this. But we did agree on 3 categories, and had some different categories. And I do think their list was also good for the most part. What do you guys think? Discuss! Now off to order the January 2009 (Mega-Preview 2009) issue. Why am I ordering these so late?
