Best Movie Opening

Blade, the vampire nightclub scene, with New Order's Confusion pumping out.

Also, Leon delivering the warning, and the Swordfish explosion was superb.
 
The Ninth Gate. I just love the camera moves. Starts with black screen and just the sound of the old man writing, then we see the man at his desk, pull back to look at the footstool in the middle of the room, track up to the noose, etc. And the final tracking shot over the shelves of library, looking for one special book, to find, a gap. Zoom into the gap and we're in the opening credits, which on a big screen give me vertigo. And the music is wonderful.

The whole thing is so assured I just sit back and relax because I know I am in the hanRAB of a trustworthy story-teller.
 
Probably not the most popular movie of all time, but the opening to Phantom of the Opera (The new musical version) is superb, especially the scene where the decayed remains of the opera house rebuild themselves into their former glory. Plus the music that accompanies that scene really gave me goosebumps.
 
Once Upon a Time in the West (1968) has by far the best opening for any movie I have ever seen.

And it's not a bad movie as well, btw. (Currently the 23rd best movie of all time according to IMDB) :)
 
the opening to magnolia is great, it screams out that life is often stranger than fiction, the lad that throws himself out of the window is shot on the way down by rowing parents, irony irony irony, just a great sequence that opens a great film.
recomend that film if you have not seen it.
 
Contact - The zooming out of the solar system scene, whilst the music playing goes back in time.

OK, so the timescales involved are totally wrong, but who cares - it's just such an excellent scene.
 
Last great beginning of the blockbuster kind was probably Scream. Expertly done, gripping and unexpected.

Star Wars is probably the greatest movie opening though.
