Swordfish - terrible film - amazing opening... Hostage siege gone wrong... then the fantastic ball bearing scene.

Brilliant.
 
I'm gonna be a girly girl now and say most of the disney cartoons especially The Little Mermaid with the ocean animation and the first shot of the merpeople.
 
Star Wars:A New Hope from a SFX point of view, Raiders from a dramatic point of view.

Also:
Scream - very unexpected
The Player - love the continues shot
LOTR: The Fellowship of the Ring - it's like watching a mini movie before the real one starts!
 
I thought that Startrek First Contact had a pretty damn good opening. The camera seemed to be flying around the inside of a Borg cube & then getting to the scene where we see Picard getting assimilated. Cool!!!

I like the opening 10 minutes of Coppola's Dracula - after that I'm done and don't need the rest of the film (which is a bit overblown anyway).

My favourite funny opening is Goldmember. ("I'm Dixie. Dixie Normous.") :D
 
Goodfellas. Three men driving along, at night, through the forest, and then they hear a banging coming from the trunk....... etc. etc.

"As far back as I can remember I always wanted to be a gangsta"

Then the opening bars of Tony Bennet comes on...

Just brilliant. Scorcese at his best :)
 
Yes I was going to say this one as well. It was great because at that point people assumed she would be the star, & then when she got killed it really shocked people.

Some great choices here :) I'd also add The Two Towers as one of my personal faves (seeing it for the first time on the big screen) My sense of excitement as it starts - the majesty of the moutains mixed with the all too familiar lines from the bridge of Khazad-Dum. All of a sudden BAM! you're back in it from a different perspective, following Gandalf & the Balrog into their freefall into the pit. Loved it :D
 
"Raiders" for thrills, "Star Wars" for awe, "Twilight Zone" for superbly lulling you into a false sense of security and then making you sh*t your pants.
 
Some very good movie openings....

Its quite funny that some of you have said Star Wars as it was recently again voted the best movie opening. I can understand why too.

Raiders of the Lost Ark has a very good opening.

And Scream was also very good, just because it was so unexpected.
