Best Movie Opening Sequence...

Well I'm still thinking it through properly but this immediately sprung to mind:

Edited to add that the opening sequence of Grosse Point Blank is a hit for me, pardon the pun! I can't find a copy of it on youtube, but it involves John Cusack's character waiting for a hit with his sniper rifle to the tune of 'I Can See Clearly Now' by Johnny Cash. Quality stuff!

Ha, Ha... sorry about that. I'm a moron - I didn't even spot that the fan made one was a fan made one. The only reason I was asking is because some films seem to have different opening sequences according to where/when they are shown, and if there are versions, then it would be good to know which one someone means. For example, I am sure I have seen an alternative, sexier, start to 'My Best FrienRAB Wedding' (Wishin' and Hopin') - but I can't find any reference to it, so maybe it's my imagination...


Sets the scene for the story nicely.

I know it probably lowers the tone, but the pre-credit sequence in The World Is Not Enough.

The speedboat chase along the Thames is quality stuff if only for it's sheer ridiculousness. It's also the longest Bond opening sequence.
 
The opening shot of Alex and Droogs in the Korova Milk Bar in 'A Clockwork Orange' has always been a favourite of mine, starting with a close up of Malcolm McDowell's face and slowly pulling back.
 
Definitely Fellowship of the Ring. To think it was never going to open that way for a LONG time, that those parts were going to be incorporated into when Gandalf was explaining things to Frodo later. It's such an amazing opening. Also The Two Towers, showing Gandalf falling with the Balrog - I still can't believe how great that scene is.
 
Look Who's Talking. Has a wonderful SFX sequence with the miracle of conception and a voice-over from Mike's sperm, ending with the mother ingloriously throwing up.

Serenity. A reminder for those who have seen it:
It starts with the Universal's logo, Earth. Then it changes to show the exodus from Earth, which a voice-over explains, and it's become a classic SF info-dump. Then it changes to reveal we are actually in a class-room, this is part of a history lesson, and the voice over is merely the teacher. Then we pull back yet again to reveal it is a dream of River while she is being tortured. And then we pull back a final time to see that what we thought was real-time footage of River was in fact a recording being replayed by the Operative. So that's five levels of frame-breaking.

Then we switch to Serenity, and we have a very long scene that introduces all the passengers and crew, and effectively gives a tour of the ship itself, all without cutting. Big contrast to the repeated disorientation of the first bit.
