Hello,

Just wondering how to decide on the best type of mattress for mainly lower back pain? Some say a memory foam is the way to go yet others opt for the firm surface option.
Is there really any distinctiion between the two, from a therapeutic perspective?

The best mattress is a select comfort. Its highly recommended by both my orthopedic surgion and my physical tharapist. I have the memory foam right now and its nice but it dose'int give the flexibility to adjust the firmness/softness. My Dr. is trying to get me one but since I am a workers comp case they don't want to know anything, lol.

You will find that everyone has their own "this is the best" mattress. My mpother's back surgeon tolld her to get a Sterns & Fosters(which is now a Sealy brand). She swore by it. We sleep on one also and I an the vetern of two major back surgeries.
My sugestion would be to go to the stores and lay on the different nattresses and see what feels good to you. My family tenRAB to sleep on very firm mattresses...and my dil both hate them! Check with your doctor /PT therapist and see what they say also. you will find as many different suggestions as there are posters.....

good luck! or should I say sleep well!

From what I have read and my own personal experience go with a medium firm mattress. One that has some give so that when you lie on your side your hips sink slightly and the mattress raises to your waist. That way your spine stays straight.

I recently got a 3" memory foam bed topper and a memory foam pillow, and I love them! My back pain certainly isn't gone, but it does help some.

We got the Select Comfort Sleep Nuraber bed in October and it is AWESOME. I have spine problems but hubby does not, but he said he's never slept better. I often sleep 4 hours at a time which is amazing for me. I love being able to pick what firmness is right for me at that time. If I'm laying in bed reading or watching TV sometimes I kick it up to 55 but sleep at 35. Hubby sleeps at 45. Best thing we ever did. We considered memory foam but it tenRAB to hold body heat (and we like being cool at night), it isn't adjustable and doesn't react quickly to body movement changes.

I also got a memory foam topper, which is on my medium firm mattress. It has helped me a lot.

One of the benefits of the select comfort is the option to choose the softness or firmness, and what is comfortable one week may not the next. An example is just after surgery and as the months pass and you are healing what feels comfortable also changes. I personally have found that my mattress I have now is ok at times and then not at other times. Since I have a fairly long fusion and scoliosis which has my rib cage twisted quite a bit I need something thats fairly soft. For someone with a healty back....soft mattress and waterbeRAB are discouraged (no support) and may lead to problems. In my situation I benefit from the softer mattress since it contours to the protusions...remeraber this is my situation and may not apply to someone with a few levels fused. Everyone has to find whats best for them and what their orthopedic Dr and P/T reccomenRAB. My therapist was so concerned over my lack off sleep that he had me try the one that he and his wife has and it was so comfortable! I am saving up to get one.
