I'm wanting to create a sculpture in honour of a friend who recently passed away to be placed permanently outside in a garden area for her. I have created smaller scales of the sculture made from paper pulp, clay and then a finish of plaster and finally paint but these are only really suitable for inside. I have read about using ready made concrete? would this give me a similar working consistancy as the plaster? I would like the sculpture to stand about a metre tall and it is going to be a Koru (fern frong) type design, tall and slender with the fern spiral at top. welcome any ideas and advice on how to go about this and what materials to use. Thanks heaps :o)

There is of course stone, Casting Portland cement. But your idea of a fern sounds more like metal might be the choice of materials. Which would achieve a more delicate look of a plant. Now depending upon the choice of metal there would be different methods applied in the production of the piece. This might range from casting of bronze to the welding of steel.or soldering of copper or even cut from any variety of metal in sheet form.
I would suggest your looking into these various materials to decide which would best fit your design.
