I'm having an outdoor party in my back yard and I'm planning to have it go late into the night. I'm kind of worried about whats going to happen around 8 or so when it starts to get pitch black. What makes the most light? I was thinking about using those little paper lanterns but are they really enough to see by? What are your suggestions.

hang a bunch of white Christmas lights up EVERYWHERE! borrow from friends and family to have a lot- string up in tree branches, along the fence, in bushes, everywhere really! then hang some of those paper lanterns in various spots also for some added detail. those will be plenty of lighting and will look really pretty at night. you can also make some paper bag lanterns yourself- get some white paper bags and punch holes in them to make some sort of design, then put some sand in the bottom for weight and a candle- scatter them all over the yard along walkways and the perimeter of the yard. bring out all your extra candles also to make candle groupings on tables and corners of the yard- put them in tall glass jars/vases/glasses to protect from the wind

Paper lanterns with flash light in them would work. But I would use some of those garden lights that are solar powered, for ground lighting, and one or two camping lanters for general lighting of the yard. One at each end.
If you just want to light the place up, and are not interested in "setting a mood" then just get a flood light with a clamp on it and an extension cord, and run it up to the top of the house, shining down on the yard. It'll be good enough to see by, and far enough away that you won't have to worry about bugs flying around the light.
$20-$30 at Lowe's, or Home Depot.
