Best Hospital in the World, My Ass!

Ugh. ER rant!

I've been having this chronic pain in my hip and leg since last September and recently it's been getting unbearable. There are many times when I can't put any wait on my leg and just sitting is painful. My DBF finally dragged me to the Cleveland Clinic ER where I had the worst ER experience of my life. And coming from my hospital history, that's really really bad.

They didn't even register me before escorting me and two others into a room with 3 beds where we had to sit forever. My DBF was told he had to register me, so he did and then came back to sit with me.

Sometime later, an LED doctor came in, didn't even ask me to change into a gown, didn't ask me anything about my history. She just asked where the pain was, moved my leg around(as I winced in pain), decided it was arthritis and prescribed Percocet and a list of general practitioners to go see. Then she walked away.

the RN came in and began triage. She was pissed that the "doctor" came to assess me before I was triaged. During the triage, it was revealed that I was allergic to Percocet, that my blood pressure was high, and that I still have a heart murmur. Then I was taken for an X-ray but the doc never put in the order but the technician did the scans anyways.

The x-rays revealed no bone damage but that still didn't determine the possible muscle, tendon, or ligament issues. The doc stuck to her opinion that it was arthritis and denied the request for an MRI. I was given a Tylenol 3 and sent on my way.

I'm still in pain, that crappy Tylenol does absolutely nothing and I'm really annoyed by the whole experience. I have a real doctor's appointment tomorrow and hopefully she can tell me what's wrong.

How does the "best hospital in the world" have the shittiest ER on the planet? They just came under fire today because they refused to administer emergency care to two gunshot victims because they had no health insurance. They have posters all over the ER saying in clear English, that, by law, they are obligated to give care to ALL emergency patients regardless of insurance status or lack thereof.

WTFery!

At least it isnt like the hospital here. I went to the ER after slicing my finger fairly bad. I ended up in the empty waiting room for about 2 hours before I saw a docotr.
That's a federal law. I hope they get their asses sued.

Sorry about your hip too.

Sorry about your ailment, but when you go into an ER, and they can't find anything really wrong... what should they do? If it wasn't a bone problem, then there probably wasn't an immediate need to jump to it and get "emergency room" on your ass.

I wouldn't be too stressed or angry about what some ER docs said. You should've even expected them to say what they did.

Feel better. Holler at us when your non-ER doc tells you the deal.

I will. Hopefully it isn't arthritis. I'm going to have the doc go through my medical history for the past 6 years or so because Fibromyalgia runs in my family and I have alot of the symptoms. They appear as individual issues but can be overall side effects of that disease.

Good luck with that.

I had a similar situation with a doctor in the ER. What happened with mine is that I had an anxiety attack, and had stopped breathing for a minute or so because my muscles in my throat had contracted. I passed out for a good while, and my mom ran me to the hospital.

The doctor insisted it was food poisoning, although I wasn't vomiting.

What the hell?

sorry bout your hip, dude. I had to sit in a waiting room full of crying infants for 3 hours one time, just so the "doctor" could poke and prod my broken nose and determine that it wasnt serious.

I'm sorry you had that experience. You have every right to complain. They were disorganized and could have really hurt you. It doesn't sound like you had arthritis if the x-rays didn't show anything. Muscles don't show up on x-rays and the lack of an arthritic joint should have cued the doctor to perform the MRI. Did she think she was Dr. House? Does she have the idea that she's right even if the tests prove otherwise? She sounds like she did want to look any further that her own head.

I hope you have a better result from your real doctor. With your history, I agree it's best they consider other options besides arthritis.

I went to the doc today and I was diagnosed with Ligament and Hip Flexor Strain.

So I get six weeks of both Motrin and physical therapy. At least it's not arthritis. Yay.

It's a federal law that they stabilize a patient. Basically, they have to patch them up enough that they can get to another hospital. Not that they rehabilitate them to a full recovery.
