So looking for some gorey, violent or scary inspiration I ask.... what are your fave horror flicks of all time?

Can be any era too.

I'll start off with a gem which doesn't get much mention anymore.

Near Dark

- D -

I know its been said to death but for me its the Exorcist.I saw it when I was 14 scared the crap out of me, now 35 and it still scares me.

Saw a very good one recently called the Orphanage. Had subtitles but I loved it.

Me neither, just as of late you got that one and [REC] plus the older ones like Devils Backbone. (Guillermo del Toro flick)

Some would consider Pan's Labyrinth to be horror too.

A list of my favourites (picked out of the hundreRAB I've seen) just in case anyone hasn't seen any of these yet.
I prefer the more suspenseful ones rather than the ones that are 'just' gorey although suspense AND gore together work well for me also.
I'm also keener on the newer films as I think you lose some of the immersion factor if the film looks dated or is in black & white etc...

Creep
Hostel 1
Hostel 2
Switchblade Romance / High Tension
Silent Hill
Them / Ils
The Descent
Wolf Creek
Storm Warning
Dead Silence
Pin
[Rec]
Suspiria
The Thing
Hills have Eyes (remake)
The Sentinel
Magic
Rosemarys baby
Don

The Shining (Kubrick)
The Thing (Carpenter)
Psycho (Hitchcock)
Carrie (De Palma)
Dawn of the Dead (Romero)
The Exorcist (Friedkin)
Evil Dead II (Raimi)
Alien (R. Scott)
Eraserhead (Lynch)
Videodrome (Cronenberg)

The Descent, and Wolf Creek are fab horror films Stephanie.

dlm - Shutter isn't Japanese, it's from Thailand I believe. Same for The Eye, that's Hong Kong/Singapore.

I've seen The Nameless (based on Ramsey Campbell's novel), Dagon (based mostly on Lovecraft's The Shadow over Innsmouth), Fausto 5.0 (surrealist horror) and the Blind Dead series (4 cheap zombie flicks with atrocious dubbing).

I have to agree. The best horror film I've seen in a long, long time.

It seems like most of the good ones have been mentioned.

Personal favorites I'd like to add:

An American Werewolf in London, Blair Witch Project (yes, I know, I'm probably the only person on here that likes it ), Invasion Of The Body Snatchers, Theater Of Blood (more comedy than horror), The Thing, Final Destination (trilogy), It's Alive (those kiRAB are scary), Salem's Lot and if I'm in the mood for a bit of cheese I like the occasional 'video nasty' like The Burning, Friday 13th, Driller Killer.

Great film. The majority don't appreciate it because you need to use your imagination, which is something lacking from today's fastfood society.
