I've recently got the itch to get a crotchrocket. I've ridden dirtbikes for about 5 years now so I know how to ride on two wheels. I know streetbikes are really different but I think I can make the switch easily. Anyways, I'm not sure what the best bike is for a beginner. I was looking at either the cbr600 or the yzf-r6. I'm not sure about jumping up the 1000s right away but I also like the new Ducati 848. So what bike do you guys think is best for strictly street and freeway riding for a beginner?

Since you already know how to ride on 2 wheels I would say your best bet is to go with what's more comfortable. Try sitting on both and go with whatever is more comfortable.

I've heard that CBRs are more comfortable for taller people. I also heard they are easier for nubs who are set on sport bikes because their power-band kicks in in higher gears (less torque in lower gears = less chance of accidental pop-ups).

I bought a 2002 GSXR-600 a year and a half ago (my first bike and my first time riding) as my first bike and I'm 6'2". It's okay to ride but after an hour I get real cramped up.

ps. I haven't put my bike down and it was a transition from nothing to a sport bike.

get a used 600 or at most 750. ride it for a year or 2 then buy the bike you really want.

most of the answers above are pretty good. the only thing i'll add is not to get a liter bike because its unnecessary and 2 much for a 1st bike.

i think that even if you've been riding street bikes for years and years a 1000 cc probably isnt as fun to ride compared to 600's because it weighs more and harder to handle. i guess the only plus side is not really having to shift gears as much??
