This question is too hard a call.

My taste changes with my mood. I'm sure I've seen "average" films that on a better night (more bevi)would be brill and visa versa.

e.g. I remember when I saw "TITANIC" for the first time. I had never seen anything so spectacular. The film to end all films I thought. Since I got it on DVD, I've seen it 4 or 5 times. I cant take anymore. Its no longer the film I thought it was.
Similarly, I watched "panic room" on 5 last night and found it really gripping, exciting, A great 90 mins worth. I remember seeing it a few years ago when it didnt do as much for me.

I'm sure that most of us have too many favs and its impossible to select an out and out number 1.

Hoever, perhaps the sign of an all time fav should be the film that youve watched most often.

In my case, I have watched the following films repeatedly (>5 times each) and will watch them again but cant pick a number one :-
The Railway Children
The Quiet Man
Gladiator
Matrix
LOTR (Fellowship of the Ring)
Toy Story
Return of the Jedii
Smokie & the Bandit
Johnny English
Donnie Darko
Saving Private Ryan
The Last Samuri
Hidalgo
The Great Escape
X Men 1 & 2
39 Steps
and on and on. (boring)

However, what I particularly like doing is studying the selections of others who appear to have similar taste to myself and picking a few from these lists that I havnt seen and give them a viewing.
eg Reservoir of Dogs, Pulp Fiction, Goodfellas, etc. etc all great films but probably wont be considered in my all time favs list.

Sorry for prattling on.
