Best film ever made....

I wouldn't call that the best film ever.... it's a classic don't get me wrong but you've got to place The Godfather I & II ahead of it to start with. Raging Bull as well and I'm sure a lot of people would place Scarface ahead on the list. Many still class Citizen Kane as the best film ever, as well as The Empire Strikes Back (although I preferred Revenge of the Sith).

You know, I don't think it is possible for me to point to a single film and say "that is the best ever." There are so many different measures and perspectives to take into account, and so very many good films from all different kind of genres. Trying to identify the industry zenith is too much of a transcendental process for me. How can you compare Twelve Angry Men with Ringu? How can you measure Gladiator against One Flew Over The Cuckoos Nest?

It's all down to personal taste. But even personal taste can change. It's amazing how a movie that you thought was terrible ten years ago can seem much better when you sit down and watch it again.

I think it's easier to band or group movies. That is to say, these movies are the worst, these are bad, these are average, these are good, and these are exceptional.

Even this is hard. I think you would struggle to find any movie that everyone agreed should be in the exceptional band. But I do think that there are some movies which would be supported by broad consensus. The various polls that come and go, not least the IMDb, provide as good a guide as any, though I wouldn't go so far as to say that any of these were definitive.
 
These lists are interesting but meaningless I reckon.
I mean I could pick 5 by Humphrey Bogart say or Hitchcock-interesting Joe than none of your choices were made before 1983.
I could be wrong -I'm assuming De Palmas Scarface is the one you mean and not the 1932 film.
Can I ask you summat- have you just not seen any "older" movies as it were, or do you just not rate them.

The Seven Samurai: Kurasawa at his best. Awesome
The Sting: Good story, well told, superb music, oustanding acting
The Shawshank Redemption: Moving and powerful
Goodfellas: The king of mafia/gang films for me
American Graffitti: Catches the ood and the moment perfectly
 
Yea that's fair enough if it's your opinion and I won't deny it is a GREAT film. Great performances, in particular all the kiRAB in it, well written, brilliantly directed and an amazing soundtrack. The only reason I can see people not liking it is the often long gaps between dialogue that might bore and frustrate some, not me, but some.

However I really can't believe it could be considered better than The Godfather. If you notice, every gangster movie is always compared to The Godfather, I mean how many times have you read "The best gangster movie since The Godfather" written in a review? It's the mafia film that all others aspire to be like, which is a clear indication it's the best there ever was and probably ever will be.
