Best ever war film?

Paths of Glory has not been mentioned...

And am I the only one who thinks (and I am a war film fan) that SPR is overrated?. Stunning opening and ending, and is a decent film, but imo much of the film between the beginning and ending is no better than countless war films...good but not great.

Ah U-571. Could have been a great film, if the Americans had not tried to re-write history (and offend everyone involved). Oh, and the fact that they cast Jon Bon Jovi in it....WHAT????

yes I always viewed Pearl Harbour and Titanic too as more of a romantic film that wasn't strong enough to stand up on their own hence putting it around the events of a disaster

Schindler's List
Das Boot
Great Escape
Dirty Dozen
633 Squadron
Dam Busters
The Longest Day
Battle Of Britain
The Foreman went to France

Not neccasarily in that order

Not even close, sorry. There are dozens better: American, British, European, Japanese, Australian...

Stunning opening and ending but imo the middle of the film is no better than a lot of war films. Frankly, I dont even rate it as the best of that decade or of the last 10-15 years, let alone the best US war film, let alone the best of all time.

Cant agree.

The war films from the 1930's to the 1970's are as good as anything recent. And in many cases better.
